Bellante among Fortress Walls, Art and Views of the Adriatic

Bellante is a destination for you if you want to discover Italian history not only in individual buildings, but also in an organically developed townscape. The town was once an ancient fief of the Acquaviva family. To this day, fortifications, churches, historic buildings and traces from different periods shape its appearance. At the same time, the Belvedere opens up a sweeping view from the Montagna dei Fiori to the Adriatic.

The fortified center of Bellante

The historic center preserves the typical structure of a medieval fortified settlement, also referred to by the Italian term Incastellamento. Part of the ancient defensive walls has been preserved, along with a square defensive tower and an entrance gate. This entrance gate to the Borgo of Bellante was built in the 12th century.

The character of the center is also defined by the “vie acquarie”. These are narrow lanes running between houses that once served to collect rainwater. For your walk, this means that Bellante’s history is revealed not only in grand façades, but also in the small, functionally shaped structures of the old town center.

Churches, façades and visible details

The Church of Santa Maria houses an Epiphany painting by Nicola Monti from 1793, attributed to the school of Paolo Veronese. The parish church of Santa Maria also has a terracotta façade. You will find another architectural detail at the parish church of Santa Croce: it has a Renaissance portal.

The town hall tower also bears a remarkable sign. Its weather vane displays the initials of the four cardinal directions, a cross, the municipal coat of arms and the inscription “Universitas Bellanti”. Such details are worth observing closely, especially if you want to explore local history through architectural forms, symbols and materials.

Ripattoni: Castle remains and cultural events

In the hamlet of Ripattoni, the remains of a 14th-century castle with a massive square-plan tower have been preserved. At the foot of the castle tower, Palazzo Saliceti is one of the historic buildings associated with the old feudal and landowning nobility. The Church of Santa Maria del Erulis, also known as Santa Maria della Misericordia, is likewise located in Ripattoni. It has very ancient origins and combines classical elements with medieval walls.

RipattoniArte includes art exhibitions and photography exhibitions as well as concerts and theater and dance performances. In 2025, RipattoniArte was associated with its 19th edition under the theme “L’ARTISTA E LO SPAZIO”; it was organized by APS Pro Loco Ripattoni and the Associazione BellantArte. Archaeological traces and sweeping views

Bellante’s historical evidence includes an oval funerary stele from the 6th century BC with a stylized depiction of a deceased person. A sandstone stele with a Paleo-Sabellic inscription bears inventory number 111434 and is dated to the end of the 6th century BC.

From the Belvedere in Bellante, the view stretches from the Montagna dei Fiori to the Adriatic.
