Churches and Historical Layers

Santa Maria a Vico is a Romanesque church dating from the 10th century. A temple stood on its grounds during the time of Emperor Trajan; this is evidenced by the “Decree of the Worshippers of Hercules,” set into the church wall. Don Alvaro de Mendoza y Alarcòn, who lived permanently in the town from 1639 to 1675, is also associated with Sant’Omero.

Remains of an ancient fortification wall have been preserved in Poggio Morello. The village is also associated with the Feast of Saint Lucy on December 13, which includes the traditional “Ballo della Pupa.” Architectural evidence and traditional festival culture thus come together in another locality within the municipal area.

Baroque Art in the Historic Center

The former SS Annunziata church serves as a community hall for cultural events. Its façade dates from 1754 and features Baroque stylistic elements. The Chiesa SS Annunziata houses a wooden crucifix from the late 16th century; it also has a Baroque organ and a Baroque wooden choir. Several periods are therefore represented in a single sacred building.

Alleys, Hills and Trails

A street boundary in the historic center of Sant’Omero forms a viewpoint overlooking the valley below and the surrounding hills. A walk through the town center leads through narrow alleys that slope downhill. In the surrounding area, the church of San Michele Arcangelo in the hamlet of Sant’Angelo Abbamano stands on a hill.

Via delle Pinciare is a cycling and walking path in the municipal area of Sant’Omero. A total of 34 kilometers can be covered on foot, by bicycle or on horseback within the municipal area of Sant’Omero. Nature and Regional Cuisine

The European bee-eater nests in Santa Maria a Vico. In some sections of the river landscape near Villa Ricci, flora and fauna of particular environmental interest have been preserved. Numerous water mills are also scattered throughout the Sant’Omero area and remain in good condition to this day.

Sant’Omero’s Sagra del Baccalà takes place every year and is officially recognized as a “Sagra di Qualità.” At Villa Corallo’s cooking classes, each approximately two-hour class is followed by a tasting of the freshly prepared dishes, accompanied by water, non-alcoholic beverages and wine.
