Churches and Art History

The Chiesa di San Salvatore stands in the centre of Morro d'Oro. Its rectangular ground plan measures approximately 20 by 40 metres; inside, it is divided into three naves, each with five bays. The building therefore provides a precise architectural reference point for exploring the town from the outset, in its basic forms.

The Santa Maria di Propezzano complex lies in the Vomano Valley, not far from the village of Morro d'Oro. The present-day church is attributed to a third construction phase in the 14th century, while the cloister dates from the 14th century. The lower loggia contains 27 lunettes with frescoes from the second half of the 17th century. They depict episodes from the life, Passion and death of Jesus, as well as the creation of Eve. The third arch on the left also contains a fresco cycle from 1499 depicting the founding of Santa Maria and an Annunciation. The Porta Santa is a monumental portal finely carved from stone and is generally attributed to the Abruzzese sculptor Raimondo del Poggio.

Museum and Local Traditions

The Museo delle arti e civiltà contadine is housed in the old Palazzo De Gregoriis. It displays around 300 objects that bear witness to more than two centuries of agricultural and craft activity in the Morro d'Oro area. The museum visit extends across three floors and is divided into nine thematic rooms. This makes it possible to explore rural working life across a range of rooms and collection areas.

The Premio Internazionale per fisarmonica “Stefano Bizzarri” was established in 1992. The initiatives of the Associazione Musicale Stefano Bizzarri also include a carnival celebration, which is now considered an established event throughout the Morro d'Oro area.

Landscape and Trails

Morro d'Oro has clay-rich areas with local gully formations, which are particularly prominent southwest of the historic centre. On its way to the village of Morro d'Oro, the Strada Brecciola crosses these characteristic gullies. In addition, the town has a network of routes that has developed from the existing rural path network and is suitable for mountain bikers, hikers and horse riders. Botany and Peasant Cuisine

The Orto Botanico near Propezzano can be traced back to 1986; it has been expanded and renovated and comprises hundreds of herb varieties. These include aromatic culinary and spice plants, fragrant and essence plants, medicinal plants and perennial herbaceous ornamental plants. The Giardino Officinale S. Maria di Propezzano is associated with a botanical garden for medicinal herbs and a cultural tourism offering at an agriturismo in Propezzano. In culinary terms, Fagioli con le cotiche is considered a simple, nutritious peasant dish made with pork rind and beans.

The former convent of Sant'Antonio was once a stopping point on the traditional spiritual routes in the Morro d'Oro area between the old town, Sant'Antonio and Propezzano.
