Nereto Between Its Historic Center and Churches

The center of Nereto lies slightly higher than the rest of the town. Its asymmetrical medieval layout extends around Piazza Cavour and gives the town a clearly recognizable historic structure. If you value established townscapes and architecture when traveling, this area provides an obvious thematic focus. Piazza Cavour is not an isolated feature, but forms part of the layout that defines the central area of Nereto.

An Unusual Church with Two Main Facades

The Chiesa Maria SS.ma del Suffragio has been documented since 1676 and today has the appearance created by a 19th-century renovation. Its two separate facades are particularly striking: they stand perpendicular to each other and both appear to be main facades. This church is therefore especially interesting for your cultural itinerary because of its distinctive architectural appearance. Its characteristic identity is shaped not only by the length of time it has been documented, but also by the unusual arrangement of its facades.

Frescoes, Pest History and Early Traces

The mother church of Nereto contains frescoes by Giuseppe Toscani depicting the “Miracle of Our Lady of Consolation.” The octagonal Chiesa di San Rocco conveys a different historical connection. It was built outside Nereto in the 17th century as a symbolic place of protection from the plague and was reserved for plague victims. In Contrada Crocetta, you can also find the Paialonga hut, the remains of a Neolithic dwelling. The surviving evidence thus spans religious art, the history of the plague and the early history of settlement.

Culture in the Surrounding Area

Additional destinations include the Museo della Civiltà Contadina in Val Vibrata. It is located in the vicinity of Nereto and broadens the view of rural culture. If you would like to get to know the town through more than just its churches and historic architectural forms, this museum can be included in your travel plans as another cultural point of reference, without equating Nereto itself and its town center with the museum.

Traditional Games and Typical Dishes

Local tradition is also reflected in “Lancio del Formaggio.” In Nereto, this game is an amateur sporting tradition passed down from generation to generation. The explanations, origins and rules of the game are handed down as well. The custom points to a form of local culture that is not tied to a single building, but continues through communal tradition.

The Settembrata Neretese includes a tasting of the traditional Abruzzese dish “Capra alla Neretese” in September. This event is especially interesting for seasonal planning if you would like to combine regional cuisine with a stay in the town. Nereto’s local cuisine also includes “Tacchino alla Neretese.” Both dishes give the destination’s culinary offerings a distinctive profile.

Summer Events in Nereto

The Estate Neretese includes at least 45 evening events in July and August. In September, the Settembrata Neretese provides a different focus with its tasting of “Capra alla Neretese.” Together with the churches, medieval historic center and traditional customs, Nereto therefore offers a range of opportunities for cultural, historical and culinary interests.
