Pietracamela between Mountain Landscapes and Village History

Pietracamela is situated in an impressive mountain landscape: the entire municipal area lies within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, while the slopes around the village are steep and predominantly covered with beech forests. The Corno Grande di Pietracamela nature reserve was also established in the municipal area in 1991. Historic Alleyways, Churches and Mountaineering

The historic center of Pietracamela is characterized by narrow alleyways, buildings made of boulders and stone, small balconies and terraces with viewpoints. The existence of the village can be traced back to 1324 under the name “Petra.” The year 1530 is displayed on the portal of the old Church of San Rocco, while the year 1432 is carved above the portal of the old parish church of San Giovanni.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni houses a permanent exhibition by Guido Montauti. The CAI Abruzzo CEA environmental education center “Gli aquilotti” is located in Pietracamela on the slopes of Corno Piccolo. The Museo dell’Alpinismo is also housed in the visitor center facilities provided by the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. The visitor center in Palazzo Dionisi also houses a permanent exhibition on mountaineering, with photographic documentation of the activities of the Aquilotti del Gran Sasso, Italy’s first climbers’ club.

Religious traditions are also part of the local calendar. The Feast of the Madonnina takes place on the first Sunday in August in Arapietra; Arapietra is a pilgrimage destination for the surrounding valleys. The San Leucio patron saint festival includes a procession through the village streets on July 11. San Rocco is celebrated on August 16 with a procession and folkloric events.

Hiking and Mountain Sports around Pietracamela

A challenging activity is the circular route to Pizzo Intermesoli. It begins in the village of Pietracamela at an altitude of 1,005 meters and leads through the Rio Arno valley to the Conca del Sambuco. It then continues to the northern Vetta at 2,483 meters and along the ridge to the main summit of Pizzo Intermesoli at 2,635 meters. Along the way, there are views of Val Maone and Corno Grande. On the return journey, the circular route leads back to Pietracamela via Val Maone. The route is considered long and challenging and is suitable for experienced, well-trained hikers.

La Madonnina dell’Arapietra is an important starting point and connection point for ascents of Corno Grande and Corno Piccolo. From Prati di Tivo, La Madonnina dell’Arapietra can be reached in about one hour by cable car or via a hiking trail running alongside the route of the facility. Corno Piccolo offers numerous climbing routes on its large limestone walls, as well as routes of medium to high difficulty. Mountain biking is also one of the activities associated with Pietracamela. One route is called “Variante Pietracamela–Intermesoli.”

The different starting points provide useful guidance when choosing your place to stay: the circular route to Pizzo Intermesoli starts in the village of Pietracamela, while access to La Madonnina dell’Arapietra is described from Prati di Tivo. Prati di Tivo is also the location of a ski resort of the same name within the municipality of Pietracamela. Getting to Pietracamela

For the final road journey to Pietracamela and Prati di Tivo, follow the S.S. 80 from the direction of Montorio al Vomano to the Pietracamela–Prati di Tivo turnoff. If traveling by train on the Adriatic railway line from the north or south, Teramo is the destination station; from there, continue by TUA bus or car.
