Ollomont between Hiking Trails and Mining History

Ollomont on the Sunny Plateau

Ollomont lies on a sunny plateau in the heart of Valpelline. Meadows, pastures, forests and pine forests surround the village and shape its landscape. For your trip planning, Ollomont therefore combines nature, mining history, regional cuisine and family-friendly activities, without requiring the individual aspects of the village to be considered separately.

Hiking between Glassier and the Tour des Combins

Ollomont is part of the Tour des Combins hiking network. Several described destinations lead from Glassier into the mountain landscape: The trail to Conca di By starts there, follows signpost 3 via Alpe Pont and crosses a characteristic stone bridge. Lago Cornet can be reached from Glassier in a 2-hour-20-minute ascent, and the Laghi di Thoules after 2 hours and 30 minutes. An ascent of 3 hours and 50 minutes from Glassier is indicated for Lago Fenêtre. The different walking times help you classify the excursion destinations according to your preferred hiking pace.

Winter Experiences for Families and Beginners

The Ollomont ski area has a ski lift. The slopes it serves are mainly suitable for beginners and families. Ollomont’s winter offering also includes the Baby Snow Park, with a conveyor belt, inflatable play equipment, a tubing slope and snow games. The Ollomont Adventure Park also caters to different interests, offering acrobatic courses and Tibetan bridges in a natural setting. Maison Grimpe offers climbing routes of varying difficulty and is also suitable for children and beginners.

Mining History in Ollomont

The Ollomont-Valpelline mining complex operated from 1700 to 1952. In Ollomont, it comprised the three areas of Saint-Jean, Balme and Vaud. The Sentiero del rame passes through mine tunnels, mining buildings and ore-smelting facilities, as well as adventure and play parks, museums and information points. At the Infopoint of the Ollomont mines, a laboratory for archaeometallurgy features information panels, videos and interactive demonstrations on the history of mining and historical copper-processing techniques. During a visit to the Saint-Jean area, you enter the underground workings wearing a helmet and carrying a lamp. The tour lasts two hours and is offered daily at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Church, Carnival, Cuisine and Getting There

Ollomont’s cultural heritage includes the parish church of Sant’Agostino, dating from 1775. During the historic carnival, the Landzette masks celebrate the beginning of spring. Their colorful costumes are inspired by the uniforms of French soldiers from the Napoleonic era. Restaurants in Ollomont serve regional specialties such as Fontina, Modzetta, sausages, Boudin or blood sausage, black bread and Valpellinentze soup. From Aosta, you can reach Ollomont by car in about 25 minutes; there is also a connection via the “Aosta – Ollomont” bus line.
