Adelfia between history, festivals and the Murge

Adelfia combines two historic centers with a distinctive church and festival culture. The two centers emerged around the year 1000 at a short distance from one another. At the same time, the town lies near the lower slopes of the central Murge. Historic Centers and Buildings

The Torre Normanna stands in the historic center of the Canneto district. The tower was built between 1147 and 1153 at the behest of the feudal lord Alfonso Balbiano and served defensive purposes over the centuries. In Montrone, the Chiesa Madre San Nicola is located in the oldest part of the district. It is an 18th-century church. Construction began around 1711, lasted approximately 15 years and was completed with the blessing by Giovanni Battista Venovelli from Matera on September 23, 1726.

The Cappella della Pietà, also known as Madonella, is another of Adelfia’s religious landmarks. It was built by Giuseppe Maria Capecizurla in fulfillment of a vow. Another historic building is Casina Don Cataldo, which bears the name Castello dei Fascina. The original residential tower was built between 1390 and 1396 by Nicolò Dottula, one of the first feudal lords of Montrone. Between 1652 and 1696, the fortified castle house was transformed into an aristocratic residence thanks to Marchese Luigi Biachi-Dottula.

Religious and Local Festivals

The Festa Patronale di San Trifone in Adelfia-Montrone is particularly extensive. It takes place every year between November 1 and November 11 and includes a procession through Adelfia-Montrone. In the early afternoon, the festival also features a fireworks competition lasting approximately three hours. The Festa Patronale di San Vittoriano in the Canneto district reflects another local tradition held in honor of the patron saint San Vittoriano.

On Shrove Tuesday, the Amici di Adelfia group performs a staged representation of the Passion of Christ along the town’s streets. Around 150 actors and extras, as well as numerous costume, sound and lighting professionals, take part. It is based on an adaptation of a text by don Peppino Diana. The Festa di Maria SS. della Pietà takes place every year on the first Sunday in September. On the following Monday, a procession takes the statue to the Cappella della Pietà and then back to the Chiesa Madre.

Local Cuisine During the Festival Days

The Festa Patronale di San Trifone is also associated with a clearly identifiable culinary offering. At specially set-up street stalls, lamb chops known as "costatine scottadito", grilled offal known as "'nghimmiredde", celery sticks, slices of Provolone and local wine are offered.
