Bitonto: Cathedral, Museums and Olive Culture
Bitonto between Cathedral and Olive Culture
Bitonto reveals its history in various places. The historic centre is home to Bitonto Cathedral, an example of Apulian Romanesque architecture; its construction began in the 12th century. Museums, theatres, religious buildings and gardens complete the city’s cultural profile. This creates a destination where architectural history, archaeology and the culture of remembrance come together.
Inside the cathedral, the marble ambo was created in 1229 by Maestro Nicolaus.
Museums, Theatres and Religious History
The Museo Archeologico della Fondazione De Palo-Ungaro is divided into four sections. Its foundation consists of grave goods discovered in Bitonto dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. The museum displays objects from the symposium, as well as from the lives of athletes and warriors and from the material culture of women. The topics therefore extend beyond a single sphere of life and reveal different aspects of ancient society.
A reservation can be made for a visit to the Museum of Peasant Civilization and Folk Traditions “Spazi della Memoria”. The collection comprises old objects that symbolise the society of earlier generations. The focus is therefore on remembrance and inherited ways of life.
The Teatro Traetta is the oldest and most important theatre in Bitonto. It was built between 1835 and 1838 on the edge of the historic city centre and has a theatre layout based on the Italian model.
The Basilica Santuario dei Santi Medici Cosma e Damiano preserves the relics of the two Anargyroi. The Museo Diocesano di Bitonto is housed in the rooms of the former monastery of the Conventual Friars Minor. The former monastery later served as a diocesan seminary and adjoins the Church of San Francesco della Scarpa. Both places thus lead to religious and institutional chapters in the city’s history.
Gardens, Views and Landscapes
The Giardini Pensili run along Bitonto’s old city walls; from there, an impressive view opens up. The Lama Balice Regional Park and the Alta Murgia National Park also extend into Bitonto. Alongside the historic buildings, this highlights the city’s connection with the surrounding landscape.
Cultural and Culinary Character
The Galleria Nazionale della Puglia “Girolamo e Rosaria Devanna” is one of Bitonto’s cultural attractions. The rites of Holy Week, which form part of Bitonto’s intangible cultural heritage, are another highlight. Culture is therefore expressed here not only in buildings and collections, but also in religiously shaped rites.
Extra virgin olive oil is part of Bitonto’s tourist and culinary identity. Bitonto is also home to the “Cima di Bitonto” olive cultivar, which bears the city’s name.
When choosing your accommodation in Bitonto, you can decide in advance what to focus your trip on: the cathedral and marble ambo, museums and the culture of remembrance, theatres and sacred places, gardens and parks, or olive culture. These topics offer different starting points for planning your days and leave room for an individual pace of travel.
