Modugno offers a clear cultural focus that is not limited to a single building. Historic churches, festivals and landscape themes provide different ways to experience this Italian destination.

Historic Architecture in Modugno and Balsignano

The fortified estate of Balsignano is one of the best-preserved rural settlements in the Terra di Bari area. Balsignano lies between two ravines southeast of Modugno's built-up centre. The Chiesa di San Felice in Balsignano is an important example of Apulian Romanesque architecture.

The present structure of the Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunziata was built between 1604 and 1626; its bell tower follows the style of Apulian Romanesque architecture. In Modugno's historic centre, the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Suffragio, also known as Chiesa del Purgatorio, stands in Piazza del Sedile. For visitors interested in culture, the appeal lies in the combination of rural settlement history, sacred architecture and a square in the historic centre.

Festivals and Culinary Connections

The Fiera del Crocifisso is a historic fair in Modugno that was inaugurated in 1622. As part of the 2024 Fiera del Crocifisso programme, the Sagra del Crocifisso included a food tour featuring typical products. Since 1622, the Fiera in Modugno has connected its history with a specific culinary programme item in 2024. For travellers interested in food, the food tour is the specific link to typical products within the fair programme. The festival in honour of Saint Roch takes place on the last Sunday in September and is accompanied by processions on the preceding days.

Cycling Route and Slow Tourism

On the Ciclovia dei Borboni, the ancient Casale di Balsignano can be reached after Modugno. Santa Maria della Grotta is considered a slow-tourism destination in connection with the routes of the Cammino Materano. For activity-oriented travel planning, the cycling route and slow tourism therefore stand as two clearly distinct themes.

Places in the Surrounding Area

The Palazzo Angarano-Maranta is a palace in the immediate vicinity of Modugno. The Palazzo del I ramo della famiglia Capitaneo is also a palace in the immediate vicinity. Parco Padre Pio is a park in the immediate vicinity of Modugno.

The Cittadella Mediterranea della Scienza is a museum in the area around Modugno; the Museo Civico - Palazzo Rogadeo is also a museum in the surrounding area. Spiaggia Pane e Pomodoro is a beach in the area around Modugno.

The two beaches, Pane e Pomodoro and Il Crocifisso, have different spatial relationships to Modugno: one is in the surrounding area, while the other is in the wider regional area. Arco Delle Meravigli is a natural arch in the area around Modugno, while Spiaggia Il Crocifisso is in the wider regional area of Modugno. The selection therefore ranges from architecture and museums to coastal and natural attractions. For your planning, the spatial distinctions are therefore more important than a generalised indication of proximity: immediate vicinity, surrounding area and wider regional area do not refer to the same range.
