Terlizzi combines neoclassical sacred art, medieval defensive architecture, an extensive collection of works by an artist, ceramic production and religiously influenced festival traditions. Co-Cathedral, Tower and Art Gallery

The architectural centrepiece is the Concattedrale di S. Michele Arcangelo. Construction began in 1783 based on a design by the architect Michelangelo Bonvino and was completed in 1872. The church is considered one of the finest and most significant examples of Neoclassicism in Apulia. Its interior contains important works of art and high-quality furnishings by local artists and craftspeople, including a cycle of paintings donated by Michele De Napoli.

The Torre Normanna, also known as the Torre dell'Orologio, is a remnant of Terlizzi's former defensive system dating from the 11th century. It is more than 31 metres high and has a belfry crowned with a majolica-decorated top. The restored interior leads through five superimposed rooms and several flights of stairs to a terrace overlooking the rooftops of Terlizzi, the nearby Adriatic coast and the heights of the Murgia.

The Pinacoteca Michele de Napoli opened in 1898 in the painter's birthplace, which he donated together with numerous works. These include designs, sketches, preparatory studies, paintings and cartoons. With more than 1,000 pieces, the Pinacoteca is the most important and extensive collection in Apulia dedicated to a single artist.

Events, Ceramics and Sovereto

The Laboratorio Urbano MAT also represents the cultural diversity of Terlizzi. Since 2019, its participatory management by Collettivo Zebù has produced more than 700 public events, including theatre series, concerts, multidisciplinary festivals, stand-up comedy, photographic exhibitions, literary gatherings and contemporary dance projects.

The Madonna di Sovereto offers another gateway to the history of the area. According to tradition, the panel painting dates from the 11th century and, according to an ancient legend, was found in the cave beneath the church. Sovereto lies about three kilometres from Terlizzi; it is home to an old hamlet and the sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna di Sovereto. From a medieval tower in Sovereto, visitors can enjoy an elevated view of the sanctuary complex and its defensive system.

Ceramics are another part of the area's craft heritage. Following a favourable decision by the Consiglio Nazionale Ceramico established at the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy on 15 December 2022, Terlizzi was included, under Italian Law No. 188/90, as an area with established ceramic production.

Festivals and Specialities from Terlizzi

The Festa Maggiore takes place on the first Sunday in August. On this occasion, the Madonna di Sovereto triumphantly returns to the city on a colossal festival float. The float is moved by devout helpers and steered by traditionally dressed drivers.

In September, sausages and gnomorelli take centre stage at the Sagra dello spiedo terlizzese. These are offal rolls flavoured with bay leaves, cooked over glowing charcoal fires and served with the elongated flatbread known as Pizzarello. Another festival celebrating olives and olive oil takes place at the end of October. It features fried pasole and nolche, olives preserved in lime and flavoured with wild fennel, as well as fresh bread drizzled with new olive oil straight from the olive mill.
