Guardavalle: Discover Frescoes, Palazzi and Festivals

Guardavalle reveals its distinctive character through sacred architecture, historic palazzi, traditional festivals and trails of varying difficulty. The ZSC IT9330108 “Dune di Guardavalle” is a protected area of particular scientific importance in terms of natural history. Sacred Buildings and Historic Palazzi

The Church of the Carmine houses the only intact example of a 17th-century frescoed dome in Calabria. In Guardavalle’s historic center are the ruins of the unfinished St Charles Borromeo Basilica. The Chiesa e Convento di Maria Assunta, dating from 1568, is also part of the sacred architecture.

Among the secular buildings, several periods guide you through the town’s history. Palazzo Trua was probably built in the early years of the 18th century as a second residence for the Trua notaries. Palazzo Sirleto was built between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century and was never completed. Palazzo Criniti is considered one of Guardavalle’s oldest noble houses; the year 1492 is inscribed on its main portal. In the hamlet of Vinciarello, you can also find Torre Cavallara, built in 1485 by the feudal lord Vincio Spedalieri.

Trails for Different Travel Plans

For a challenging tour, there is the Cascate Bocca d’Assi – Elce della Vecchia (Guardavalle) route. It is 55 kilometers long, involves 1,650 meters of ascent, is considered difficult and takes around five hours. Guardavalle also has the Arcadia hiking trail. For this route, you should plan breaks in addition to the approximate duration, because the distance, ascent and difficulty level determine your day’s schedule.

Festivals, Flowers and Local Specialties

The festival of the patron saint Sant’Agazio is celebrated in Guardavalle on May 7. During the procession of Sant’Agazio, many flowers are brought into the church and placed on the saint; additional flowers are distributed from the balconies and arcades of the houses. This procession adds a distinctive religious accent to the festival calendar.

Culinary traditions are also part of the local annual cycle. At the Festa di San Martino, locally produced Novello wine and cured meats are offered on November 11. The Sagra della Melanzana has been held for more than 30 years and offers eggplant dishes, food stalls and live music.
