Borgia between the high plateau and the Ionian Sea

The built-up centre of Borgia lies on a hilly high plateau at an altitude of 341 metres above sea level. From here, Borgia overlooks the Ionian Sea and offers views of the Gulf of Squillace. The elevated location and views of the Ionian Sea shape the landscape character of Borgia's town centre. Borgia's parish church is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, the town's patron saint. Palazzo Mazza is an imposing 19th-century building in the historic centre of Borgia. The parish church dedicated to the town's patron saint and the 19th-century Palazzo Mazza can be considered two specific buildings in Borgia. Both buildings offer different perspectives on Borgia and its history.

Archaeological traces at Scolacium

The Museum and National Archaeological Park of Scolacium presents archaeological finds from prehistoric times as well as from the Greek, Roman and medieval periods. The Archaeological Park of Roccelletta near Borgia preserves the remains of the Greek city of Skylletion. The site of Scolacium also included an amphitheatre built during the imperial period. In the park, the remains of Skylletion meet the amphitheatre from the imperial period; this means that the archaeological perspective extends from the Greek period to a later Roman structure. Those interested in the long periods of Italian history will therefore find several historical layers here that can be explored in a specific landscape and local context.

Santa Maria della Roccella in the Archaeological Park

The Basilica of Santa Maria della Roccella stands in the Archaeological Park of Scolacium. It was probably founded by the Normans in the 11th century on the remains of a Byzantine monastery. Its style is reminiscent of Romanesque architecture while also displaying Oriental and Arab influences.

Palazzo Mazza and MuNaBO

Palazzo Mazza is home to MuNaBO – Museo Narrante di Borgia. The museum conveys the material culture of the area through multimedia installations and video projections. MuNaBO is currently temporarily closed to the public while its multimedia installations are being updated. When planning a visit, it is therefore important to distinguish between the historic site, Palazzo Mazza and the museum, which is currently closed. Palazzo Mazza thus connects the museum address with Borgia's historic centre. The multimedia presentation of MuNaBO therefore stands alongside the historic buildings in the town centre.

Seasonal shuttle to the beaches of Roccelletta

A free seasonal shuttle from Borgia to the beaches of Roccelletta is planned for tourists and residents. The scheduled operating period runs from 1 July to 31 August. The service is therefore limited to the two summer months.
