Archaeology at the Museo Archeologico Lametino

The Museo Archeologico Lametino is located on the first floor of the monumental San Domenico complex, in the former Dominican monastery in Lamezia Terme. It is divided into three sections—Prehistory, Classical Antiquity and the Middle Ages—and covers the history of the area from the Paleolithic to the late Middle Ages. The chronological arrangement is complemented by a presentation on experimental archaeology, which reconstructs Neolithic tools and techniques for making ceramic vessels.

Terina and the Ancient City Layout

A particular focus is placed on the Area archeologica di Terina. Systematic archaeological investigations identified an organized urban layout there and confirmed the ancient settlement of Terina, a sub-colony of Kroton. The excavated area includes a residential district whose parallel axes form a regular urban grid. This makes it possible to understand ancient urban planning through a clearly recognizable basic pattern.

Monasteries, Fortresses and Historic Buildings

The Abbazia Benedettina di Santa Maria was built in 1062 by Roberto il Guiscardo on the remains of a Byzantine monastery dedicated to Saint Euphemia. Initially, it was administered by Benedictines under Norman-Staufen rule. During Angevin rule, it passed to the Knights of Malta, who remained there until its destruction in the 1638 earthquake.

The Bastione di Malta is considered the best-preserved architectural structure in the Lamezia area. It was built in the mid-16th century as part of the coastal defense system against raids by the Saracens, who had been reorganized under the Ottoman flag. The castello normanno di Nicastro also stands on Colle di San Teodoro hill in Lamezia Terme.

Books, Art and a Thermal Highlight

The Casa del libro antico preserves more than 2,500 books printed since the beginning of the 16th century in Italian and European centers of printing, as well as several manuscripts and archival records. The Museo diocesano is divided into seven sections and primarily displays works and objects by southern Italian and local masters from the 15th to the 20th century.
