Montauro between Coast and History

Montauro combines coastal landscapes, architectural history and local traditions. Historic points of reference include the Grangia di Sant’Anna, the Grangia di Montauro and the Church of San Pantaleone. Montauro Lido is the coastal district of Montauro located on the Gulf of Squillace. On the coast lies Calalunga di Pietragrande, a small cove of sand and pebbles between two impressive cliffs.

The Grangia di Sant’Anna

The ruins of the Grangia di Sant’Anna stand at the end of a hill south of the built-up centre of Montauro. The complex is notable for a distinctly Cistercian architectural style and clear geometry: the ground plan is rectangular, with square towers at all four corners. The architectural style remains confined to the complex itself: the rectangular structure and the four towers form its external shape.

Grangia di Montauro and San Pantaleone

Another historic complex is the Grangia di Montauro. It was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. The Church of San Pantaleone was built in 1609. San Pantaleone is the patron saint of the municipality of Montauro; the church of the same name bears his name. The traditional celebrations in his honour ended with the celebration of the Ottavario. The medieval construction period of the grange and the church’s construction year of 1609 belong to different eras.

Montauro Lido on the Gulf of Squillace

Calalunga di Pietragrande

Calalunga di Pietragrande is a small cove of sand and pebbles located between two impressive cliffs. At Calalunga di Pietragrande, the seabed drops immediately to greater depth. At the same time, the cove has crystal-clear, transparent water. Sand, pebbles and cliffs are found here alongside the seabed that drops immediately to greater depth; the crystal-clear, transparent water is also part of the cove. Anyone observing this stretch of coast will therefore encounter different natural forms in one specific place.

Local Festival Tradition and Museum on the Beach

La Notte Azzurra is a sagra held on 2 August and dedicated to the catch from the Ionian Sea. 2 August is the specific calendar reference for planning around La Notte Azzurra. The „Dadada beach museo“ is a museum directly on the beach, described as the first museum in the world located directly on a beach. The maritime dedication of the sagra and the museum’s beachfront location establish two different cultural points of reference on the coast of Montauro.
