Cropani: Sacred Heritage, Hill Trails and Sea Views

Cropani combines a historic town center steeped in history with landscapes, archaeological sites and views of the sea. The historic center forms a terrace overlooking the sea. At the same time, the Crocchio estuary in Cropani Marina, the hills around Cropani and the trails in the Valli Cupe area are among the different facets you can take into account when planning your trip.

Sacred Art and a Long History

The Piccolo museo d’arte sacra di Cropani is located in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. It occupies the rooms of a 16th-century chapel adjacent to the sacristy area. The cathedral itself dates from the 13th century and was reopened to the public after years of work, as well as recently completed conservation and structural safety work on the roof and dome.

Another cultural highlight is the Antiquarium Comunale in the complex of S. Caterina d’Alessandria. There you can see Greek and early medieval transport vessels, as well as an early medieval child burial reconstructed here. The exhibits also include votive materials from the Greek sanctuary of Acqua di Friso, including characteristic miniature pottery and an Attic askos with black-figure decoration dating from the 5th century BC. If you are interested in the development of the town and its surroundings, this collection spans the period from ancient cults to the early Middle Ages.

Acqua di Friso and the Basilicata District

The Greek sanctuary of Acqua di Friso dates from the 6th to the 5th century BC. Its complex includes a sacellum, a service building and two favissae, where votive offerings were deposited. The sacred area appears to have been associated with a female deity. The Basilicata district is also home to a Christian religious building with an adjoining burial ground and a Byzantine village dating from the 6th to the 8th century AD.

River Landscapes and Trails through the Hills

The mouth of the Crocchio River is located in Cropani Marina. It is part of a site of community importance and is suitable for observing nature and wildlife. For a trip in which landscapes and observation are just as important as culture, this district therefore offers a distinct focus within Cropani.

Hiking trails in the hills around Cropani lead through gorges and past small waterfalls. Along the way are archaeological sites spanning the period from the Neolithic to Late Antiquity. On a route in the Valli Cupe nature reserve, you can follow the Crocchio upstream. Before flowing into the Ionian Sea, the river crosses the territory of Cropani. This allows you to combine experiencing nature, physical activity and historical sites across different landscapes without equating the individual locations.

Olive Oil as Part of the Local Character

An old oil mill in the historic center has been restored and converted into the Museo dell’Olio of Casa Ligarò. Casa Ligarò produces extra virgin olive oil; the entire production cycle takes place on the company’s own land.
