Grisolia: Historic Centre, Museum and Churches
The historic centre of Grisolia lies at an altitude of 465 m on a terrace on the right flank of the valley of the Vaccuta stream, at the foot of the limestone spur of Monte Caprinoso in the Paolan Chain. Its medieval linear layout extends along a mountain ridge. The area of Grisolia belongs to the Orsomarso Massif. The townscape combines a medieval settlement structure with the landscape of the massif. From the valley of the Vaccuta stream, the spatial setting leads across the terrace to the foot of the limestone spur of Monte Caprinoso.
Palazzo Ducale and Ethnographic Museum
The Palazzo Ducale dates from the 15th century and now houses the Ethnographic Museum of Grisolia. The history of the building and its cultural use give the site a clear cultural and historical focus.
The Museo Civico Etnografico di Grisolia began in 1991 with an initial collection of objects from agro-pastoral culture, exhibited by the Associazione Italo Muti. In the Grisolia museum, the term agro-pastoral refers to the connection between agriculture and livestock farming within the local community. The museum displays folk tools and equipment used in production and consumption within the local community. The connection between the objects and the contexts in which they were used thus leads directly to the areas of work associated with the local community.
In addition, the Museo Civico Etnografico di Grisolia organises temporary exhibitions and educational activities in the vaulted entrance area of an old aristocratic palace. Alongside the agro-pastoral objects, temporary exhibitions and educational programmes therefore also form part of the museum's cultural profile. The temporary exhibitions and educational activities extend the museum's use beyond the initial collection and keep the historical setting of the old palace present.
Churches and Religious Sites
The Church of San Leonardo preserves remnants of Byzantine-style frescoes. The Church of Sant'Antonio di Padova is one of the most significant religious buildings in the historic centre of Grisolia.
The church commonly known in Grisolia as San Rocco was elevated to the status of a diocesan shrine in 1995 by a decree of Bishop Augusto Lauro. The familiar designation San Rocco and the name Santuario San Rocco da Montpellier each refer to the same church in Grisolia. San Leonardo, Sant'Antonio di Padova and San Rocco represent three distinct ecclesiastical points of reference in Grisolia. For those interested in culture, individual travel planning in Grisolia can treat the Palazzo Ducale, the Ethnographic Museum, San Leonardo, Sant'Antonio di Padova and San Rocco as separate topics.
Acqua di Pedarrone
Acqua di Pedarrone is designated as a viewpoint in Grisolia. The landscape features of the mountain ridge, Orsomarso Massif and the designated viewpoint of Acqua di Pedarrone can serve as spatial orientation in Grisolia when planning a trip.
