Altavilla: Churches, History and the Crati Valley

Altavilla amid churches, history and landscapes

Altavilla can be discovered through its churches, historical traces and the surroundings of the Crati Valley. Religious buildings are the focus: the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is Altavilla’s parish church; the Chiesa della Madonna della Neve is located in the lower part of the historic center. This creates a cultural focus combining religious architecture, local history and landscape views.

Churches with medieval and more recent traces

The Chiesa di S. Maria della Neve is considered to have been founded in 1420 and at that time served as a “hospitalis”, meaning a religious place for travelers, the sick and those in need. It is a small single-nave church. Inside, there is an altar from the mid-19th century with a statue of the saint to whom the church is dedicated.

The churchyard of the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta lies on a terrace supported by three medieval pointed-arch stone arcades. The arcades are dated to the end of the 13th century; at the same time, the churchyard offers a view over the Crati Valley. As Altavilla’s parish church, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta thus combines a religious function, distinctive architectural forms and a direct connection to the landscape.

Historical signs around Altavilla

Near the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta in the Altavilla hamlet, there is a tuff inscription reading “hoc conditum est”. It could date from the imperial period, possibly from the 2nd century AD. The inscription offers a glimpse into a period significantly earlier than the medieval church buildings, but its dating remains a possibility.

The Motta di Corno was built around 1300 as a defensive system introduced by the Angevins to protect the surrounding area. A few meters from the bank of the Torrente Corno, the ruins of ancient watermills are also visible. A hike to the riverbed of the Corno began at Piazza Zumpo in the hamlet of Altavilla di Lappano. From there, the route initially continued by car to the village of Ponte Mulino and then on foot. This combination of riverbed, mill ruins and historic buildings is particularly appealing to travelers who want to explore landscape and history together.

Religious customs and important days

Traditional drums, known as “Tommarini”, announce the novena of the Madonna della Neve and accompany the procession to the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta. Every year, the statue of the Madonna della Neve is carried through all the contrade of Altavilla—on the calendar on August 5, but according to tradition after August 15. If you would like to experience culture not only through buildings but also through rituals, this combination provides a tangible point of connection.
