San Demetrio Corone lies at an altitude of 521 metres on a ridge on the northern slope of Sila Greca. From there, the town overlooks the Crati Plain and the Pollino. Its distinctive character arises from the landscape and the Arbëresh identity that remains rooted in local life to this day.

Landscape between Sila Greca and the Crati Plain

In the upper part of San Demetrio Corone, numerous chestnut groves shape the vegetation in the districts of Buttorino, Castagna Rotonda, and Poggio. They give this area a distinctive natural character. The altitude, the view across the Crati Plain, and the orientation towards the Pollino provide the town with a clear landscape setting.

Arbëreshe culture in local life

In San Demetrio Corone, the Arbëresh identity, its culture, traditions, language, Byzantine rites, and colourful traditional costumes remain rooted in local life to this day. This connection is expressed not only in individual buildings but also in the town’s cultural forms of expression.

The Arbëreshe Song Festival of San Demetrio Corone plays an explicit role in preserving this heritage. It protects and promotes the rich Arbëreshe cultural heritage and encourages linguistic and musical research. The feast day of San Demetrio is celebrated on 26 October.

Macchia Albanese is also home to the birthplace of Girolamo de Rada, who lived from 1814 to 1903. He was a central figure in the Rilindja and one of the founders of modern Albanian literature.

Churches, icons, and historical testimonies

In the Chiesa di Sant’Adriano, the floor is partly made of opus sectile and partly of mosaic. Opus sectile refers to a design made from cut slabs, while the mosaic consists of individual elements set in place.

The Chiesa di Maria SS di Costantinopoli, also known as Chiesa di Mezzaratura, is a Byzantine Greek Catholic church. Its wooden iconostasis is decorated with icons of the Virgin and Child, Christ Pantocrator, and several saints. The Chiesa di San Demetrio Megalomartire was one of the first Arbëreshe churches with an iconostasis and a square Greek altar beneath a baldachin, as well as a dome with four columns.

The Centro Culturale Girolamo De Rada houses a municipal library with an extensive collection of books and other resources. Its focus is particularly on local and Arbëreshe culture.

The two mills of San Demetrio Corone are located at different elevations and used the gradient of the same watercourse to drive the mill wheels one after the other and process grain into flour.

The route to the Eremo di San Nilo

The remains of the Eremo di San Nilo lie in the Vallone di Sant’Elia, 1 km from the Chiesa di Sant’Adriano. The unpaved path leading there is steep and difficult to walk. The distance of 1 km therefore only partially describes the access route.
