Discover Lattarico: Churches, Historic Center and Local Traditions
Churches, Historic Traces and Local Characteristics
Lattarico reveals its special character through churches, squares, historic buildings and local customs. The focus is on religious buildings and traces of older architecture, complemented by the historic center, green spaces and seasonal foods. This creates a multifaceted experience combining architectural history, religious heritage, walks and everyday culinary culture.
The Historic Center
The historic center of Lattarico consists of narrow streets that are often accessible only on foot. Elaborately crafted portals of old palaces and connecting round arches over the streets are also part of this area. Palazzo Marsico is included on the list of historic residences in Calabria. In the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista in the historic center of Regina, the church is traditionally dated to the end of the 14th century.
Religious Buildings with Special Details
The Chiesa di San Nicola di Bari was built in 1547 in the Romanesque-Gothic style. It includes a Chapel of the Deposition with statues of the dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows. There is also a baptismal font beneath a round arch. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio was originally part of a larger monastery complex dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua; the year 1585 is carved into its entrance portal.
The Chiesa dell’Immacolata preserves unframed paintings on canvas, as well as remnants of a commemorative plaque marked “DGVC 1820” and a stone bishop’s coat of arms. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista contains a concave baptismal font on a marble base that has retained its original 14th-century form. The church also houses an anonymous painting of the Marriage of the Madonna, presumably dating from the 18th century.
Regina and Historic Religious Heritage
The Convento di San Francesco di Paola stands in Piazza San Francesco in the Regina district, at the entrance to the historic center. The former Chiesa di San Francesco di Paola is connected with the plan, documented around 1515, to establish monasteries dedicated to the saint from Paola. The Madonna delle Grazie is associated with the former monastery of the Reformed Friars Minor in Lattarico; it is a statue carved in marble. The Vecchia Chiesa della Madonna del Pettoruto is located in Località Casalicchio in the Comune di Lattarico; access is via the central Piazza del Popolo.
Green Spaces and Outdoor Leisure
The Contessa Caracciolo park contains rare plants and centuries-old trees. The Villetta Comunale is a central green space with trees, benches and a small soccer field. Inside, it has level, wheelchair-accessible paths; it also offers free-to-use green spaces and facilities for visitors.
Customs and Festive Foods
Every year, the historic “Benedizione del raccolto delle olive,” the blessing of the olive harvest, takes place at the Contessa Caracciolo estate. At Christmas, thirteen dishes are prepared and eaten in Lattarico together with a cross-shaped bread called “natalise.” At Easter, the traditional pastry “Ginetti,” glazed cookies, is prepared in Lattarico.
