San Roberto between Culture and Aspromonte

San Roberto combines a complex local history with destinations in the green heart of Aspromonte. The village was probably founded around the middle of the 14th century as a hamlet of the Barony of Fiumara and followed its feudal fortunes. At the same time, San Roberto served as a central link between the production areas of Aspromonte and the trading centers on the coast. Art at the Telesia Museum

The Telesia Museum is housed in a Liberty-style building that is itself of considerable artistic interest. The museum displays more than 300 works donated by Italian and foreign artists and collected by the master Riccardo Ghiribelli. A visit therefore focuses not only on the works on display, but also on the building in which they are shown.

Visits to the Telesia Museum from Monday to Friday are available by reservation at 347/4519916. On Saturdays and Sundays, visits are available from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you would like to divide your days between culture and nature, the museum can thus be treated as a separate item on your itinerary alongside San Roberto’s trails and scenic destinations.

Laghetto Rumia and Mountain Trails

Laghetto Rumia is an artificial lake within the municipality of San Roberto at an altitude of approximately 1,300 m. The site is equipped for trout fishing and is also considered an important hiking destination. This gives you a clear focal point if, while traveling through Calabria, you want to experience the transition between local culture and mountain landscapes.

The Sentiero Garibaldino begins at Laghetto Rumia in San Roberto. The trail passes through beech forests and the fragrant broom of the “carbunari”. Another old, scenic route leads from San Roberto to Passo del Falco in the green heart of Aspromonte and offers a view of the Strait of Messina. The two routes highlight different landscape experiences: the lake marks the beginning of the Sentiero Garibaldino, while Passo del Falco is connected with the old trail, Aspromonte and the view across the strait.

On June 16, 2024, the Sentiero del Mulino De Salvo, Calamona e Grazia was inaugurated in Parco viale delle Mimose in the municipality of San Roberto.

Festivals and Calabrian Crafts

The patronal festival Festa di San Giorgio in San Roberto takes place on the first Sunday in August. A procession through the village follows on Monday. It proceeds from Via Mulino toward Colelli, reaches the Funicà Bridge and then continues through the village streets. The established schedule links a date in the annual calendar with specific streets and squares within San Roberto.

Basket weaving is also one of the village’s visible Calabrian craft traditions and is particularly practiced in San Roberto. Those interested in regional culture will find here, alongside the museum and the patronal festival, a craft that is directly connected with local tradition.
