Those wishing to explore culture and history in Grottaminarda will find a historical focal point at Castello d’Aquino. Castello d’Aquino is an early medieval fortress situated above the middle Ufita Valley. Sections of the Aragonese outer walls have been preserved at the fortress. Castello d’Aquino houses the Museo Antiquarium Filippo Buonopane. The fortress, preserved walls and museum thus provide different ways of exploring the town’s history and can be viewed as a cohesive cultural focal point of the town.

Historic Buildings and Old Transport Routes

Grottaminarda’s history also includes buildings with clearly defined former functions. The Dogana Aragonese was built in 1467 by Ladislao d’Aquino as a collection point for feudal transhumance duties. It was declared a national monument in 1930. The Fontana del Re was built in 1606 at the entrance to Grottaminarda along the Via Nazionale delle Puglie. The Stazione di Posta had a different historical function: it was one of the post stations on the Via delle Puglie. Because of its historical importance, the Stazione di Posta was also declared a national monument in 1930.

Gardens, Valley Views and a Vespa Museum

The hanging garden of Castello d’Aquino includes a terrace with a belvedere overlooking the Vallone Palombara. The Santuario Maria SS.ma di Carpignano is also interesting for appreciating the landscape around Grottaminarda. It is located five kilometres from Grottaminarda in the direction of Fontanarosa and offers a view over the entire valley crossed by the Ufita River. The Museo della Vespa in Grottaminarda offers a completely different way of engaging with the town’s culture. It contains 1,000 items, including models, gadgets, body shells and mechanical parts.

A clearly time-limited detail is recorded for the Museo della Vespa: in June 2025, it was open to the public on Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00 and otherwise by reservation. The Torre di Guardia can be reached by car and on foot. In 2025, the Festone of Grottaminarda was celebrated for the 134th time in honour of the town’s patron saints Sant'Antonio da Padova, San Rocco da Montpellier and San Tommaso d'Aquino. The Fiera dell’Immacolata is a traditional fair in Grottaminarda held all day on 8 December; the announced new edition was estimated to be the 120th documented edition. In addition to historical exploration, the town therefore offers points of interest for travellers who appreciate regional sweet treats and tradition-related events.
