Buildings and Sacred Art

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore is a religious building dating from the 12th century. Its distinctive local-stone façade and imposing bell tower form another historic landmark of the town. The Chiesa di Santa Felicita Martire contains significant paintings from 1573. Some of the paintings attributed to Ovidio Martino depict the martyrdom of Santa Felicita and her seven children. The Cappella di Maria SS. di Costantinopoli also contains a painting of Our Lady of Constantinople with the Child.

The Santuario di Santa Felicita is also one of Rocca San Felice’s religious destinations. It is located near the Mefite of Rocca San Felice and not far from the town center. As a result, sacred sites, the historic structure of the village and the distinctive landscape around the Mefite come together when planning a trip, without these impressions having to be reduced to one and the same experience.

Ceramics and Regional Flavors

The Museo Civico “Don Nicola Gambino” displays around 150 ceramic objects for everyday use and for setting the table. The collection consists mainly of late-medieval earthenware; items on display include pans, pots and lids. The area’s culinary heritage also includes Pecorino di Carmasciano. It is produced in Carmasciano, a locality divided between Rocca San Felice and Guardia Lombardi. The cheese is based on an old, entirely artisanal tradition.

Valle d’Ansanto and Lake Mefite

In the nearby Valle d’Ansanto, archaeological finds provide evidence of an Italic temple dedicated to the goddess Mefite, located near the sulphurous lake of the same name. The landscape therefore has both an archaeological and a natural-history dimension. At Lake Mefite, gaseous emissions continue to make the sulphurous waters bubble. This ongoing natural process defines the character of the site and clearly distinguishes the Mefite from ordinary lake landscapes.

Events and Walking Experience

During “Medioevo alla Rocca”, artists and merchants bring the village streets to life. The program includes demonstrations of historic crafts as well as historical explanations of the figure of Count Ruggiero. The Festival dei Cortili features early music, food tastings and straw fires. The two formats have different focuses: while “Medioevo alla Rocca” centers on craftsmanship and historical reenactment, the Festival dei Cortili combines music, flavors and the atmosphere of the courtyards.

The “In Cammino intorno all’Appia” route is equipped with international continuous white-and-red trail markings, as well as signs at the municipalities it passes through and at important fountains or monuments.
