Cairano: Church, Cellars and Archaeological Traces

Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo

The Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo is the mother church of Cairano and is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. During its restoration, the original 18th-century floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross was restored. The floor plan gives the church a cruciform layout.

The design of the entrance also brings together different historical periods. The ancient marble portal of the Chiesa di San Martino Vescovo has been fitted with a newer door featuring six hand-hammered copper bas-relief panels. At the entrance, stone, metal, sacred architecture and the visible connection between older and newer design appear side by side in concrete details. The six panels belong to the newer door, not to the ancient marble portal. The restored cross shape therefore belongs to the building itself, while the copper panels belong to the church's newer entrance door.

Le Cantine Ipogee

The Le Cantine Ipogee district in Cairano comprises more than 100 underground cellars. The caves of Le Cantine Ipogee are of archaic origin and were used as cellars. Beneath the visible street level, historical cellar spaces thus form a distinct part of Cairano.

The Sentiero naturalistico in Cairano is a trekking trail created by the CAI. It complements the town's architectural and archaeological themes with a nature-oriented aspect. Excavations on the Collina del Calvario revealed a settlement core and, beside it, an archaic necropolis.
