Castelvenere: Wine, Tuff, and Medieval Heritage

Castelvenere lies in the Valle Telesina and combines a wine-growing landscape, a medieval townscape, and regional history. The town stands on tuff rock, which is associated with the cyclical volcanic activity of Roccamonfina, Campi Flegrei, and Somma-Vesuvius. Around the historic center, scenic hills and shady valleys alternate across the municipal area among vineyards and olive groves.

Wine and Regional Cuisine

About 11 of Castelvenere’s approximately 14 square kilometers are covered by vineyards. The wine-growing area is protected by the two DOP designations Sannio and Falanghina del Sannio, as well as the IGP designation Benevento. The culinary side includes Scarpella di Castelvenere, a typical local dish whose ingredients vary depending on the foods available in the household pantry. The fifth edition of Pizza e Falanghina also takes place in Castelvenere, combining a Neapolitan specialty with Falanghina del Sannio.

The Medieval Village

In the medieval village, architectural elements, the urban layout, towers, and tuff cellars dating from the 14th and 15th centuries form part of the townscape. More than thirty tuff cellars create an underground city there. The Museo della Civiltà e delle Tradizioni contadine is a demo-ethno-anthropological museum in Castelvenere’s medieval village.

Torre Venere is considered a Norman tower dating from the 10th to 11th centuries; at the same time, it may have originated in the Angevin period. Of the three surviving towers at Castelvenere’s important historic site, Torre Venere is considered the most historically significant. In the village, attention is therefore drawn not only to the medieval layout but also to different historical layers.

The Chiesa Madonna della Seggiola was designed in 1899 and built on the site where an ancient pile-dwelling structure was discovered in 1898. The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Foresta is located in Contrada Foresta and is said to have developed from a Basilian temple. Both churches add distinctive sites and traditions to Castelvenere’s historic character.

Hiking and Events

The Valle-Telesina Winetrekking is an approximately 10-kilometer circular hike through Guardia Sanframondi and Castelvenere without technical difficulties. For visitors who want to combine the wine-growing landscape with exercise, this route description provides a clear connection to the surrounding area. The Scampagnata Vennerese is held on Easter Monday in Parco Rascolagatti, with outdoor food stalls.
