Palaces, fountains and artisanal details

If you want to understand the character of the town through individual buildings, the details begin with the palaces. Palazzo Capozzi was built at the beginning of the 19th century and showcases the craftsmanship of local artisans in construction, stonework and wrought iron. Palazzo Galanti was built in the 18th century, is the birthplace of the historian G.M. Galanti and now houses a cultural association dedicated to him. The Fontana Monumentale is a three-arched fountain built at the end of the 19th century to a design by the architect Parente. The three arches define the architectural appearance of the Fontana Monumentale.

Sacred buildings with a long history

The sacred buildings also reach far back into history. The Sant'Antonio monastic complex dates from the 7th century, was later restored and includes an 18th-century cloister. The Chiesa di Santa Croce and the Franciscan monastery date back to the 7th or 8th century AD and tower above the town. The former Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria Assunta was severely damaged by the 1688 earthquake and expanded and rebuilt from 1761 onwards; this resulted in a three-aisled church.

Local culture and Carnival

The Biblioteca Comunale G. Vitelli is also part of the local culture. It contains more than 4,000 catalogued and digitally recorded volumes and has also overseen publications on the town's folk songs and traditional occupations. La Pace takes place in Santa Croce del Sannio in February on Shrove Tuesday and is organised by the Pro Loco di Santa Croce del Sannio. Landscape between woodland and tratturo

The area of Santa Croce del Sannio is crossed by the Regio Tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela. The Bosco di Castelpagano, a woodland area with coppice and other forested areas, lies between Santa Croce del Sannio and Castelpagano. In the municipality of Santa Croce del Sannio, Colle San Martino, Case Sordi and Piana dell’Olmo are also covered by a declaration of special public interest issued in 2024.
