The Castello di Circello Above the Valleys

The Castello di Circello stands on a rocky slope opposite and dominates the valleys of the Wildbach streams Torti and Tammarecchia. Its location alone makes the castle an important reference point for understanding the town. In Norman times, the Castello consisted of a ring wall with a round tower serving as a keep.

The castle's military history is also closely linked to a specific historical event. During the battle fought on 3 June 1496, the Castello di Circello withstood attacks by French, Swiss and German troops against the Aragonese army led by Giovanni Sforza. Those interested in medieval and early modern history can therefore view Circello through the development of its fortifications and its role in the power conflicts of the time.

Churches with Different Historical Traces

The Chiesa di San Nicola offers several starting points for exploring Circello from a cultural and historical perspective. It dates from the Lombard period; its construction is attributed to local Campanian craftsmen and is believed to have taken place around the 11th century. Inside, the church has a single-nave layout. Its furnishings also include a stone altar and several bas-reliefs.

In the case of the Chiesa di San Rocco, the earliest documented historical records date back to the first half of the 16th century. One bell bears the year 1518. In addition, the exterior walls feature masonry made of local stone. These details draw attention not only to the age of the religious building, but also to its materials and craftsmanship.

The Convento San Francesco is also part of the historical picture. The adjoining church is dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli. In October 1651, the monastery was able to accommodate twelve monks. The old Convento San Francesco was destroyed by the earthquake of 1962 and subsequently rebuilt with state funds. Its history thus also represents religious life, structural change and the way a historical rupture was dealt with.

The Torre di Sant'Angelo is the bell tower of the former church of San Michele Arcangelo in Circello, which no longer exists. It thus points to a place of worship that has disappeared and broadens the view of the town's historical development beyond the surviving churches.
