Archaeology and Early Traces

If you would like to discover Italian local history across several periods, San Paolo Bel Sito offers numerous points of interest. One specific cultural reference is the painting “San Paolo eremita” by Nicola Cacciapuoti: it is dated 1751 and is located in San Paolo Bel Sito.

Archaeological finds at the Vigna, Montesano and Campo Stella sites provide evidence of intensive settlement in the area of San Paolo Bel Sito during protohistoric and Roman times. Two skeletons from the Early Bronze Age were also discovered in San Paolo Bel Sito; their deaths are associated with the eruption of the so-called “Pomici di Avellino” in the 19th–18th century BC. The finds include a settlement from the Late Bronze Age, dated to the 11th–10th century BC. In addition, there are the remains of an Italic temple from the 4th–3rd century BC and a Roman villa from the late Republican period or early Imperial period.

Villas, Palaces and Sacred Art

Villa Montesano, also known as Montesanto, stands on a small hill just outside the built-up center of San Paolo Bel Sito. It is associated with a stay by Domenico Cimarosa and the composition of “Il matrimonio segreto” there. Villa Bellosguardo was once a holiday home of the Capecelatro family and is said to have been built on the remains of a Roman villa. From there, there is a view of the ruins of Cicala Castle. The ancient ducal palace Palazzo Accinni is located near Piazza Camillo Santorelli. It was probably built by the Mastrilli in the 16th century and remodeled in the 18th century at the behest of Giacomo Milano, Prince of Ardore, Marquis of San Giorgio and Duke of Santopaolo. The Palazzo preserves late Baroque decorative elements, known as “falcon wings,” above the window and on the balconies beside the portal.

The parish church of San Paolo I Eremita e Santa Prima Martire dates from the period between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Its 18th-century furnishings include polychrome marble altars, an organ, and a stuccoed and gilded wooden pulpit. The chapel of Villa Simonelli preserves wooden statues and two 19th-century frescoes.

Historic Character of the Town

From the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, San Paolo Bel Sito developed into a sought-after holiday resort for the Neapolitan aristocracy because of its favorable geographical location and the natural beauty of the landscape. This period connects the landscape with the villas and palaces that reflect different eras in the town’s history.

Festivals and Local Culture

On May 10, 2025, the “Sagra del cuzzetiello” took place in San Paolo Bel Sito, organized by the Maria SS Addolorata 2024/2025 festival committee. A traditional procession in honor of the Addolorata was part of the festival program on August 3, 2025.

“Fontane di Luce” illuminates the courtyards of the historic center and marks the beginning of the celebrations in honor of Maria Santissima Addolorata. The annual event reinterprets an 18th-century summer tradition through light installations and stages historical costumes, professions and customs. Traffic was regulated in San Paolo Bel Sito on August 5 and 6, 2025, for “Il Teatro dei classici napoletani.”
