Schiazzano: Church, Traditions and Paths through the Landscape

Schiazzano is suitable for travellers who want to get to know the character of a place through its architecture, traditional production methods and paths through the landscape. History and Architecture in Schiazzano

The Church of Santissimo Salvatore was built at the end of the 16th century on the remains of a 15th-century church and completed around 1624. Its main altar, made of polychrome marble, dates from the 18th century. Opposite the parish church stands an 18th-century palace. The historic Casale of Schiazzano also has a past in which it once flourished through lake trade. Tourists explore the lanes of the Casale. Another cultural perspective is offered by the “Le riggiole” route, which follows the traces of Ignazio Chiaiese, the Neapolitan master of the riggiole art who was active in the 18th century.

Traditions, Cuisine and Crafts

Culinary themes also shape the ways of getting to know Schiazzano. Azienda Agrituristica Turuziello offers a demonstration of mozzarella production. There, mozzarella, caciotte, caciocavalli and Provolone del Monaco DOP are made according to traditional family recipes. The “Schiazzano e Tradizioni” tour includes a guided visit to a historic citrus grove dating from 1893, a tasting of typical products, an explanation of limoncello made according to an old recipe, and the preparation of pizza at Ristorante da Francesco in the historic centre of Schiazzano.

At the Fiordilatte Festival, held in Schiazzano on 6 August and the following days, traditional preparations featuring Fior di Latte, local cheeses, Provolone del Monaco and lemons are offered. The festival also includes an exhibition of local crafts featuring metalwork, glass mosaics, woodwork, embroidery and lace.

Landscape and Special Routes

The landscape around Schiazzano includes chestnut woods and lemon gardens. The living nativity route begins next to the parish church near the piazza and leads through lanes alongside citrus groves, vineyards, stables, craft shops and open-air stalls. The living nativity recreates an 18th-century Neapolitan scene with around one hundred costumed participants. In this way, the route combines local lanes and landscape features with a historical portrayal.

Travelling by Bus

For travelling by public transport, the SITA services between Massa Centro and Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi are relevant. These buses stop at the junction with the turn-off to Schiazzano. Some SITA buses continue to Schiazzano’s village square. These two stops provide a specific point of reference for your journey and for further planning of your stay.
