Culture Among Sanctuaries and Remembrance
The Santuario di Santa Sofia originated as a small chapel and was elevated to the status of a diocesan sanctuary in 2009 by decree of the Bishop of Vallo della Lucania, Monsignor Rocco Favale. Architecturally, it features three naves, a raised transept, an apse and a Byzantine-style dome.
The remains of an extra-urban Santuario Epicorico were found in the village of San Nicola, in the Albanella area. The nature of the sanctuary and a ritual that also involved the burial of clay votive figurines make the hypothesis that Demeter and Kore were worshipped there plausible. Also in the Albanella area is the Cappella dell’Apocalisse, dedicated to San Giovanni Evangelista. It was built in the past century to preserve the historical and religious memory of the vanished church of Santo Janni. Palazzo Spinelli serves as a library and, at the same time, as an active cultural centre with events, exhibitions and literary gatherings.
Nature and Outdoor Activities
The Oasi WWF Bosco Camerine lies in the municipality of Albanella, in the province of Salerno, near Cilento-Vallo di Diano National Park and at the foot of the Alburni. It covers approximately 100 hectares and preserves habitats with xerophilous grasses, meadows and Mediterranean maquis with clearings and small lawns. Albanella can also be discovered through a specific culinary example: during the 30th edition of the Festa dell’Olio di Oliva, a tour through the streets, lanes and squares of the historic centre led to 20 themed taverns. Local specialities included Pasta e patate con le cozze, Paccheri with cod and olives, Lagane e ceci, Frittelle, Soffritto, Pizze cilentane, fried egg with truffle, Strinatielli, frittata with new oil and typical desserts. The combination of the townscape, the tour and regional cuisine gives the event a distinctly local character.
