Altavilla Silentina between History and Landscape

Altavilla Silentina combines a historic center with living traditions, sites of remembrance and a variety of trails. The town layout dating from the 18th century has remained almost unchanged there. As you pass through the lanes, ever-changing panoramic views open up, creating a close connection between history and landscape in the way the town is experienced.

The Cente and the Town’s Festivals

A distinctive cultural tradition is that of the “Cente”. These are usually boat-shaped votive offerings made from candles of different sizes, set on wooden and metal frames and decorated with ribbons, lights and flowers. During the procession, thirteen Cente are generally carried together with the statue of the saint to every house in the town.

The Festa di Sant'Antonio da Padova and the procession of the Cente take place in Altavilla Silentina on June 13. The tradition is also maintained through events such as the “Palio delle Cente” and historical reenactments. The August fair is also firmly associated with the town: it is known as “Fera r'austt”.

Churches, Monastery and Historical Traces

Several buildings provide tangible points of reference for the town’s history. The San Francesco Monastery was established around 1435. The year 1761 can be read in the Church of San Francesco; the work in question is attributed to Solimena.

More recent history is also present in the area around Altavilla Silentina. Using information panels and digital content, the Percorso della Memoria reconstructs the sites of the Battle of Altavilla in September 1943. Quota 424 was considered a strategic objective when planning the Allied landing on the coast of the Gulf of Salerno. A monument to those who fell in the fighting there, from all parties to the war, was erected at Quota 424.

On Foot through the Historic Center

The Visitaltavilla circular route is the focal point for exploring the townscape. It leads through the main streets of the historic center as well as medieval lanes, taking in buildings, monuments and artistic installations. The route thus combines different ways of seeing: the preserved town layout, historic architecture and contemporary art in public spaces.

In addition, Altavilla Silentina has eight signposted trails with a total length of 80 km. They are suitable for hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking. In addition to its lanes and buildings, the town therefore provides a basis for planning a trip that combines physical activity and culture.
