Arenabianca between Limestone, History and Mountain Trails

Arenabianca lies on a sunny mid-slope at around 680 metres above sea level. The town stretches in terraces along a gentle slope and overlooks the valley below. The light-coloured limestone quarries to which Arenabianca owes its name continue to visibly shape the townscape and its urban character. This creates a destination where landscape and built heritage stand closely side by side.

Architecture and Historical Traces

One of the most distinctive buildings is Il Palazzo, which dates back to 1874. Its pebble-paved courtyard, the stucco-decorated entrance with a groin vault, the arcaded porticoes and the wrought-iron staircase bring together several characteristic architectural details in one place. Villa Gerbasio is a 19th-century summer residence with an adjoining park.

The present-day settlement of Arenabianca developed around the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto in the 17th century. At the same time, the origins of the town reach further back: pre-Roman archaeological finds in Località Cafari support Arenabianca’s ancient origins. Some historians associate the town with ancient Cauli; the name Cauli has appeared on historical maps since the 16th century. In connection with the historic road between Montesano and the Certosa di Padula, Arenabianca is considered linguistically and civically linked to Padula.

Religious landmarks also form part of the townscape. The Parish of Santa Maria di Loreto is located in Località Arenabianca, Montesano sulla Marcellana. The restored altarpiece of the Madonna di Loreto returned to the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto in Arenabianca. Hiking between Trails and Valleys

The Cammino del Negro is a 160-kilometre circular hiking trail through one of Southern Italy’s most fascinating valleys. The route follows old mountain paths, gravel roads and quiet minor roads. The stages are generally considered short and suitable also for less experienced hikers. Petrizzo is located in Località Cafari, the Arenabianca district, and has 12 sleeping places. Padula in Arenabianca has four sleeping places and 20 dining places. Casa Cauli was renovated by the heirs of the Padula family with the aim of cultivating the land. The building lies at the foot of the Monti della Maddalena and offers a particularly privileged viewpoint over Monte Cervati.

The local culinary tradition includes the yellow bread “u pan(e) citr(o)n(e)”, which was the most important staple food for generations. The name refers to a regional expression, while the history of the bread complements Arenabianca’s agricultural character. Together with Casa Cauli, the limestone quarries and the views of the surrounding mountains, this creates a multifaceted picture of the town.

Events and Getting There

The Palio delle Frazioni gives people born in Arenabianca the opportunity each year to represent their district at a community event. The Festa della Collina was held for the first time in August 2002; later, 16, 17, 18 and 19 August were established as fixed event days. These dates are part of the documented development of the festival and should not be equated with a general statement about current event dates.

To reach the destination from the Padula-Buonabitacolo exit of the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria motorway, follow the former SS 19 delle Calabrie for approximately 400 metres in the direction of Lagonegro–Casalbuono. The route then continues along the SP 192, which leads to the town centre after around 4 kilometres. This connection also makes the town centre understandable as part of an individually planned journey through the landscape between Padula, Montesano and Casalbuono.
