Giungano between Nature, History and Cilentan Tradition
Accommodation in Giungano
Giungano combines natural landscapes with impressive historic buildings and regional traditions. Numerous trails run along Monte Sottano and Monte Cantenna. In the town and beyond the municipality’s built-up area, churches, palazzi and monastic complexes preserve various traces of the past.
Nature Trails and Striking Landscapes
The numerous trails on Monte Sottano and Monte Cantenna offer botanical and nature routes. The routes pass through slopes, rocky steps, gorges, springs, waterfalls and caves. This gives you an impression of Giungano shaped not only by built-up areas but also by diverse natural features.
The Bosco dell'Elci is a 30-hectare Mediterranean scrubland dominated mainly by strawberry trees. These plants are considered endangered there. The area therefore represents a distinctive botanical aspect of Giungano’s landscape, without requiring any particular use or current access.
In the Gola di Tremonti, a waterfall approximately 50 metres high plunges from the edge of Monte Cantenna through the gorges into a valley surrounded by lush vegetation. The Gola di Tremonti is associated with the final act of the so-called Slave War between the insurgent followers of Spartacus and the Roman troops led by Licinius Crassus in 71 BC.
From Giungano’s higher points, the view extends from the Gulf of Salerno to the mountains of the Cilentan hinterland.
Palazzi and Historic Townscapes
The Cimitero Benedettino stands at the entrance to Giungano. It was built in the 12th century together with a small church, making it an early example of the town’s religious and historical character.
In the 17th century, the Palazzo Ducale was the historic seat of local power. Fundamental decisions for the area were made there. The 18th-century Palazzo Picilli is characterised by artistically and historically valuable stone portals that define its architectural individuality.
The Palazzo Aulisio houses an old stone olive mill and a library containing texts from the 18th century. Both elements point to different aspects of the building: the former processing of agricultural produce as well as the preservation of written records.
The Palazzo Stromilli is a historic residential building that preserves original architectural elements. Together with the Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo Picilli and Palazzo Aulisio, it demonstrates the diversity of historic architectural forms found throughout Giungano.
Churches and Monastic Heritage
The Chiesa della Santa Patrona Maria Assunta dates from 1400. It has an onion dome and preserves an old statue of the Vergine Pestana. The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea, dating from 1300, is regarded as a medieval architectural structure.
Outside the built-up area of the municipality of Giungano stands the Convento Benedettino, with preserved enclosing walls and an adjoining chapel. Together with the Cimitero Benedettino at the town entrance, it broadens the view of Benedictine heritage in and around Giungano.
Gastronomy and Cilentan Tradition
In Giungano, the Festa dell'Antica Pizza Cilentana took place from 6 to 11 August, an event dedicated to gastronomy, culture, tradition and music.
