Ascea is ideal for a trip that combines ancient history with paths by the sea and a distinctive coastal landscape. An important cultural landmark is ancient Elea, also known as Velia. In addition, Marina di Ascea, the sandy beach and the paths along the cliffs offer different ways to discover the surrounding area at your own pace.

Velia: History in Concrete Structures
Velia was founded around 540 BC by inhabitants of Phocaea. One of its notable structures is the Porta Rosa: the fully dry-laid sandstone arch has a barrel vault and served not as a gate, but as a viaduct. The Casa degli affreschi is a peristyle house dating from the first decades of the 2nd century BC. It covers approximately 400 m² and contains more than 30 rooms.
The ancient cultural heritage of Elea is associated with the Eleatic school and the philosophers Parmenides, Zeno and Melissus of Samos. The archaeological site also contains the Roman necropolis of Porta Marina Sud, with small mausoleums and several burial enclosures. The Masseria Cobellis dates from the 1st to the 2nd century AD and was built on several levels around a spring. The Terme Romane, a trapezoidal thermal complex, also date from the 1st to the 2nd century AD.
Further insights are provided by the Hellenistic Asclepeion on three terraces and the Acropolis of Velia, which is laid out on two terraces. The visible Teatro di Velia is the result of a Roman reconstruction and could accommodate around 2,000 spectators. In the exhibition rooms, you can see ceramics, statues, coins, jewellery, as well as other works of art and objects from everyday life. Educational programmes are available there for schools, families and visitor groups, including guided tours, interactive and immersive workshops, as well as other educational activities.
Coastal Paths with Different Route Profiles
If you would like to explore Ascea on foot, the Sentiero degli Innamorati offers a clearly defined route: the easy circular trail is 2.1 km long and follows the same route in both directions. The starting point is in Ascea; the trail is accessible via the cliffs of Marina di Ascea at Punta del Telegrafo.
Another option is the “C’era una volta il mare” trail. In Ascea Marina, it runs from Velia to Punta del Telegrafo. The route is 2 km long and takes around 1.5 hours on foot. Compare the two paths by length and course when planning your day around a shorter loop or a longer connection.
Beach, Dune and Geological Landscape
Within the municipality of Ascea, Marina di Ascea has a 7 km-long sandy beach. South of Marina di Ascea lies a protected Mediterranean dune where the rare sea lily grows. Within the municipality of Ascea, Punta del Telegrafo is designated as a Site of Community Importance for its vegetation and the geological layering of the Cilento flysch.
