Sea, Beach and Coastal Observations
For the 2026 bathing season, Atrani’s bathing waters were classified as “excellent.” The basis for this is Resolution No. 42 of the Regional Government of Campania dated 19 February 2026. The beach consists of a mixture of sand and fine gravel; you will find both free-access and managed sections there. The Dragone River divides it into two parts. Atrani’s small piazza provides direct access to the beach and the sea through an old passageway. This passageway was built to protect the boats from storm surges.
A panoramic walk can lead directly from Amalfi to Atrani. In the evening, you can watch the boats depart from Atrani for lampare fishing. The open space on Corso Vittorio Emanuele offers a particularly good view of Atrani; among local residents, the open space is simply known as “Stradone.”
Churches and Historical Traces
The Chiesa di San Salvatore de' Birecto was built in the 10th century. During the time of the Republic of Amalfi, it served as a palatine chapel where the dukes were crowned. The bronze doors of this church, made in 1087, are now kept in the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena.
The Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena Penitente was founded in 1274 on the remains of a medieval fortification. It has two transepts: one is covered with vaults clad on the outside with majolica tiles; the other has a flat roof. The Collegiata also houses the sculpture “La Madonna pastorella,” dating from 1789.
The Santuario Santa Maria del Bando was first mentioned in written records in 1187. It lies at the foot of Monte Maggiore, also known as Monte Aureo, in a rocky setting with woodland vegetation and Mediterranean maquis. The cave is now called Grotta di Masaniello; Masaniello hid there in 1647. The Atrani Museo Open Air comprises three artist’s benches created by the Vietri ceramic artist Franco Raimondi from hand-painted lava stone.
Local Flavours and Festive Day
Sarchiapone is the traditional festive dish served during the celebrations in honour of Santa Maria Maddalena in Atrani. It consists of cannelloni made from elongated zucchini, stuffed with minced meat, fried and covered with tomato sauce. The celebrations take place on 22 July.
