Historic Centre and Earlier Architectural History
The Castello Marchesale stands in the upper part of the historic centre. The castle dates from the 12th century and acquired its present architectural layout in the 15th century. This building therefore reveals two important phases in the town’s historical development.
The Chiesa Santa Maria delle Grazie houses a wooden statue of Maria SS delle Grazie, acquired in 1811. The Torre Campanaria in the historic centre was originally part of the old Chiesa di San Nicola di Mira. This church formed part of a monastery built in the 14th century by the friars of the Ordine di San Francesco della Scarpa.
The Ponte della Difesa also leads back to an earlier era: the bridge is of Roman origin, and its remains preserve two of its original arches.
Paths, Green Spaces and the Tanagro
The Sentiero su Serra S. Giacomo is a hill path with a picnic area and viewpoints.
The Pineta, a green space equipped for spending time outdoors, is located in Largo Braida. A nature trail also runs along the Fiume Tanagro in Contrada Ponte and includes a picnic area.
Auletta is one of the municipalities within the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni. Its connection with nature therefore extends from individual paths and recreational areas to the broader setting of the national park.
Handicrafts, Olive Oil and Artichokes
Auletta’s traditional handicrafts include embroidery, cotton crochet and wool knitting. These activities complement the historic buildings with a local craft tradition.
Auletta has a significant tradition of olive oil production, linked to the climatic conditions and the favourable properties of the soil. The regional food culture also includes the Slow Food product Carciofo bianco di Pertosa, which is produced in Auletta, Caggiano, Pertosa and Salvitelle.
MIdA and the Bianco Tanagro Festival
MIdA is an integrated museum system that combines nature with educational models designed to create a strong sense of involvement. MIdA’s institutional headquarters are located in the Palazzo Monumentale Jesus on Via Rivellino in Auletta. This nature-focused museum system therefore complements the historic churches, the Castello Marchesale and the Ponte della Difesa.
The Bianco Tanagro Festival takes place every year as a long weekend centred on the artichoke of the Tanagro area. The programme includes gastronomic “taverns”, culinary discussion sessions, cooking shows, itineraries and popular music. The festival thus combines the regional product with a varied gastronomic and cultural programme of events.
