Cardile Between Village History and Nature

Cardile combines a vivid village history with religious traditions and striking landscapes. An unusual insight is offered by „Cardile in Miniature“: The model, covering more than 30 m², recreates the old village to scale. Moving figures depict historical activities from peasant society and traditional crafts of the past.

Historic Centre and Sacred Sites

In the historic centre, the houses were built directly on sedimentary rock, resting on round-arch vaults. The Church of San Giovanni Battista also has a long history: the first historical records of it date from the second half of the 16th century. Following its restoration in 1995, the church received wall paintings depicting liturgical scenes.

The historic character of Cardile also includes the baronial palace, which comprised prisons, a baronial courtyard and an olive mill. In the municipality of Gioi Cilento, in the hamlet of Teano di S. Salvatore, which belongs to the Cardile district, there is a square ruin that has been partially preserved in height. The Chapel of San Rocco was built as an expression of the devotion of Cardile’s residents. It stands on the outskirts of the village and symbolises the saint’s protection of Cardile from a deadly disease.

Traditions and Festivals

Several stories shape the local memory. Cardile is said to have been founded in the mid-16th century by residents of the hamlets of Teano and Casalicchio, which disappeared after raids, and who sought refuge elsewhere. Tradition holds that the statue of Saint John the Baptist arrived in Cardile around 1700. It is likewise said to have been carved in Neapolitan craftsmen’s workshops from wild pear wood.

Cardile’s patronal feast of San Giovanni takes place on 24 June. During the celebration in honour of the patron saint, a lamb traditionally donated by local shepherds is carried behind the statue in a procession. The traditional Via Crucis takes place on the Friday before the feast, following the Madonna del Carmine nature trail from the church to the chapel.

Fiumarella and Paths Through the Landscape

The Fiumarella tributary runs along the western side of the village before flowing into the Alento River. Seven waterfalls form along its course, some of them up to 25 metres high. The Sentiero della contemplazione runs from the centre of Gioi Cilento to the Cardile district. The landscape also includes the Cappella Madonna del Carmine, a small sanctuary on a rocky outcrop believed to be of Basilian origin.

The Chestnut Festival takes place on the last Saturday in October and includes tastings of marroni and products made from chestnuts.
