Valva between Monte Marzano and the Sele Valley

Valva lies at the eastern foot of Monte Marzano, near the Serra delle Rose, and dominates the area of the Sele Valley, which is bordered by the Monti Picentini range. The area is largely mountainous and rich in flora and fauna.

Churches and buildings in the historic center

At the heart of the historic center stands the Chiesa Madre San Giacomo Apostolo. The 18th-century church has three naves, Baroque portals and an elaborately crafted marble high altar, regarded as an important example of local religious architecture. Also located in the historic center is the aristocratic Palazzo Marcelli, with the adjoining Chapel of Sant'Antonio. A square tower dating from 1600 houses the municipal clock. The Chiesa della Madonna degli Angeli is one of the most impressive religious buildings in the upper Sele Valley. A smaller building, founded in 1435, presumably once stood on its site.

Archaeological traces and historic sites

Finds from the Greek period have been discovered in the Valva area. Numerous commemorative inscriptions and memorial stones from the 1st century AD add to this historical picture. Thus, the historical perspective extends from the Greek period through the 1st century AD to the sites and buildings of later centuries. The ruins of Valva Vecchia lie northeast of the present-day settlement. The Villa d'Ayala di Valva complex includes a castle measuring about 600 square meters and up to approximately 20 meters high. It comprises three floors, an attic, a tower and an adjoining courtyard.

Nature, caves and trails on Monte Marzano

The Monti Eremita - Marzano Nature Reserve near Valva offers numerous hiking trails, including CAI Trail No. 203, with views of the Sele Valley. The Apennine wolf and the peregrine falcon are among the species found in this natural area. The Grotta di Valva lies below a rocky outcrop; the path there takes about an hour. The Grotta di San Michele is an impressive natural sanctuary dating from around the year 1000. It features, among other things, stalactites and pools of clear water.

Local traditions throughout the year

The Sagra de La Taratella takes place every year from 10 to 12 August in the heart of Valva's town center, specifically in the former cellars of the Sovereign Order of Malta. On this occasion, you can sample Taratella, prepared according to a recipe passed down from generation to generation. Valva in Fiore is also associated with Valva and takes place in June and July. The Concerti al Castello are also associated with Valva and take place throughout the summer season.
