Sassano between natural landscapes and local history

Sassano combines an expansive natural landscape with prominent traces of local history. The Valle delle Orchidee lies in the Monte Cervati area of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano e degli Alburni National Park and extends across the entire municipal territory of Sassano. This means you can discover the area through both nature and landscape experiences and its architecture, religious sites and historic buildings.

The Valle delle Orchidee as a specific route

The Valle delle Orchidee route begins in the centre of Sassano near a stone fountain with distinctive masks. It is 13 km long, leads from an altitude of 500 to 1,175 m and includes 12 rest areas. When planning a day of hiking, you can therefore take the route, elevation gain and breaks at the twelve rest areas into account together. The elevation gain shapes the timing of the day. The connection between Sassano and the Valle delle Orchidee extends from the town centre to the Monte Cervati area. The starting point in the centre also connects the route with a striking detail of the townscape.

At the Villa Comunale: play and exercise

The Villa Comunale Paolo Borsellino has a children's playground and an outdoor gym. The complex also includes spacious pedestrian access routes and an entrance for people with disabilities. The playground and outdoor gym complement Sassano's landscape-oriented side with a place where play and physical activity stand side by side.

Church, library and historic buildings

The Chiesa Madre San Giovanni Evangelista is a three-nave building dating from 1602. The Biblioteca comunale Pasquale Petrizzo e Michele De Lisa provides a different cultural focus. It is located in the historic Palazzo Babino in the upper part of Sassano. Together, the church and library offer two different approaches to local history: on the one hand, the sacred architecture of a dated building; on the other, a municipal institution in a historic palazzo.

The rock sanctuary of San Francesco, dedicated to Saint Francis, stands next to Ponte Peglio. The stone bridge Ponte Peglio lies on the route to the Valle delle Orchidee and is a well-preserved historic structure on Sassano's mountain paths. As a result, sacred history, bridge construction and the paths leading towards the valley come together here, without the bridge losing its historical independence.

Castello Sanseverino can be found near Sassano as a castle. Campo Sportivo (loc. Castagneto), an ancient site, is also located in the surroundings of Sassano.
