The ring walls of the Castello dei Sanseverino extend for about two kilometres and are largely preserved in good condition. The Piazza d'Armi forms the central and oldest core of the castle. It was used for military events; its small towers served to position war machines. Those who want to understand historical architecture through its structure will encounter different scales here: a long line of fortifications, a clearly defined inner core and details designed for military purposes.
Church Art and Sacred Heritage
The churches of Mercato San Severino also lead through different centuries. The first records of the Chiesa di San Giovanni in Parco date from 1412, as evidenced by a contemporary inscription. This church houses an altarpiece of the Virgin and Child created by the Neapolitan painter Fabrizio Santafede in 1580. The Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Grazie is first documented in 980 and was listed as a parish church in 1481 under the name “S. Maria de Foro S. Severini”. The Convento di Sant'Antonio also contains a sarcophagus made of the finest marble and of outstanding workmanship. It is supported by four winged figures symbolising faith, justice, temperance and fortitude.
Archaeology at the Antica Rota
Excavations at the Antica Rota uncovered a Roman building, as well as a cemetery and a sixth-century church. This church was later converted into an early medieval parish church. An archaeological excavation campaign completed in 2024 also uncovered a mosaic dating from the first century AD, which is regarded as evidence of the existence of a stately villa. The Ministruttura Museale (MIMU) is housed in the Palazzo Comunale. It was inaugurated in 2018 and serves to provide in-depth information about the research and excavations at the Castello Medievale dei Sanseverino.
A Natural History Perspective on the Parco del Castello
The natural history section of the MIMU is dedicated to the flora of the Parco del Castello dei Sanseverino and comprises more than 300 specimens of plants, seeds and essences from the Mediterranean maquis. Alongside castle history and archaeology, the flora of the Mediterranean region thus emerges as a distinct thematic focus.
