Magliano Vetere: Rock Chapels, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage

Magliano Vetere is ideal for planning a trip that combines landscapes, cultural heritage and regional festivals. Trails ascending to the peaks of the local limestone massifs offer views of the Gulf of Agropoli and the island of Capri. The Gole del Calore loop trail also leads through the surrounding area: covering approximately 5 km, it follows the riverbed towards Magliano Vetere and reaches the foot of Magliano Nuovo.

Hiking between riverbeds and mountain peaks

Several clearly distinct routes are available for different hiking plans. A trekking route connects Capizzo with the Cappella Rupestre di San Mauro Martire; the chapel is about an hour’s walk from the town. The Monte Faito–Monte Chianiello–Varco Cervone loop trail starts in the town centre of Monteforte Cilento, is approximately 19 km long and offers views of Monte Faito and the Rupa della Noce in Magliano Vetere. The different route lengths help you plan shorter and more extensive excursions.

Rock chapels and traces of the past

The Cappella Rupestre di Santa Lucia Vergine e Martire is located above the settlement of Magliano Vetere and can only be reached on foot via trekking trails. In the cave behind the altar, there are ancient frescoes painted on the rock. In the Cappella Rupestre di San Mauro Martire, you can see 15th-century frescoes depicting episodes from the lives of saints, angels, musicians and singers.

The Museo Paleontologico del Parco Nazionale Cilento Vallo Diano e Alburni is located at Via Roma 63 in Magliano Vetere. The location was chosen because a new fossil-bearing site containing Cretaceous plants was discovered in the municipality. Another historic structure is the Ponte Medievale sul Fiume Calore, which probably dates from around the year 1000.

Magliano Nuovo and regional festivals

Magliano Nuovo is considered a fortified settlement with a strong ring wall and seven defensive towers. Every year from 31 July to 6 August, the Sagra del Cavatiello Maglianese takes place in this town at Piazza Belvedere. The focus is on handmade traditional dishes from the region.

In the main town of Magliano Vetere, the Sagra Della Castagna is celebrated every year in December. It showcases chestnuts gathered in the municipality’s chestnut groves. On 11 July, Capizzo holds the patron saint festival Festa Patronale Di San Mauro Martire. The programme includes a pilgrimage at dawn to the rock chapel, as well as religious and secular celebrations throughout the day. On the third Sunday in September, Magliano Vetere follows with the Festa Patronale Di Santa Lucia V.M., which likewise includes a pilgrimage at dawn to the rock chapel and religious and secular celebrations throughout the day.
