Most of these tombs were chamber tombs or cist tombs; traces of color or ornamental decoration have been preserved on them.

In the 6th century BC, the settlement of Pontecagnano had an urban character. At that time, it had two sanctuaries as well as fortifications consisting of an earth rampart and a ditch. Another significant phase was the foundation of Picentia by the Romans in 268 BC. Some remains of this Roman city are visible in the Parco Archeologico di Pontecagnano.

The archaeological park covers 22 hectares behind the modern settlement. It includes the remains of the ancient Etruscan-Campanian settlement. Excavations have also brought to light a fully uncovered insula of the Roman colony of Picentia. It comprises the main street, the decumanus, a side street and remains from several construction phases.

The park is also a green oasis offering opportunities for social interaction, education and recreation. The Parco Archeologico di Pontecagnano contains an environmental education center, and the grounds also include an area for urban gardens.
