Piaggine: Nature, Churches and Festivals in the Upper Calore Valley
Accommodation in Piaggine
Piaggine is located in Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The area stretches along the upper valley of the Calore River. Here, a distinctive river and mountain landscape combines with historic churches, palaces, festivals and paths leading to special natural sites.
Nature and hiking trails around Piaggine
At 1,898 metres, Monte Cervati is the highest mountain in Campania. The ascent begins approximately 9 km from the centre of Piaggine; the final 2 km follow an unpaved road. One hiking route covers 15 km and takes approximately 5–6 hours. From Piaggine, you can reach the Grotta della Madonna della Neve on foot via a section of the CAI Sentiero Italia, which coincides with the Sentiero Cervati.
On the way to the summit, the hike passes the Madonna della Neve, which has been a pilgrimage destination for centuries. An equipped area on the plateau below the Cappella dell'Assunta sul Monte Vivo offers beautiful landscape views all year round. On 15 August, worshippers gather there to celebrate the Assumption of Mary. Golden eagles, wildcats, Apennine wolves, deer and chamois can be found in the Bosco dei „Temponi“.
A special feature of the historic centre is the Cascata di Piaggine. It forms where the Calore River flows beneath a medieval humpback bridge and creates a waterfall. In midsummer, the Cascata di Piaggine may run dry because the river may then carry no water. You should take this seasonal change into account when planning a visit to this townscape.
Historic Centre and Sacred Art
The historic centre of Piaggine features coats of arms, portals and courtyards that point to old local families. The Chiesa di San Pietro was built in the 13th century and rebuilt in 1765. The restored church is an example of Campanian Baroque. The Church of Madonna del Carmine was built in the 16th century and is attached to the Capuchin monastery. It houses a polyptych by Giovanni De Gregorio from 1633.
The Convento dei Cappuccini was founded in 1615 as a philosophical and theological school for the education of the local community. It has been restored and put to another use. At the Palazzo Vairo on Piazza Plebiscito, you can admire a building constructed in the 18th century. The Palazzo Tommasini is a historic Baroque-style building with a courtyard. The courtyard of the Palazzo Cono Bruno contains a fountain and a niche that formerly held a statue of the Madonna.
The “Chiainari nel mondo” Museum tells the story of Italian and Piaggine emigration. In the historic centre, the San Giuseppe fresco depicts a group of shepherds who settled near the Calore River and from whom the town developed. Another fresco on Corso Sayalonga shows Piaggine from the perspective of the “Preta r l’ommn” and symbolises the equality and inclusion of the local community.
Festivals with a Local Character
The tradition of the Focare takes place every year on Christmas Eve. In almost every neighbourhood, a fire known as a “focara” is lit; residents donate wood for it as a sign of unity. The Madonna del Carmelo celebration includes a nine-day rosary prayer, a procession through the town, fireworks and live music by a band. These dates and customs give a stay in Piaggine a clearly recognisable cultural dimension.
