Marina di Praia is considered a popular bathing spot and also serves as the starting point for short boat trips that can lead to the nearby Grotte di Suppraiano or the nearby Grotta dell'Africana along the surrounding coast.
The paths through Praiano also give a stay its own rhythm. The Passeggiata di Grado includes a public staircase leading down to the Torre di Grado and the sea. The Passeggiata di Terramare is a short, demanding route with excellent panoramic views of the coast. Those exploring Praiano on foot will therefore encounter both the direct descent to the sea and short stretches where the view across the coast takes center stage.
Church Art with Many Historical Layers
The Chiesa di San Luca is a Baroque parish church dating from 1588. It was restored in 1772 and stands on the site of an earlier building from 1123. Particularly rich in detail are the majolica dome integrated directly into the apse and the majolica floor from 1789, decorated with flowers and birds. At its center, San Luca is depicted painting. The Chiesa di San Gennaro complements this picture as a Renaissance basilica with three naves and a Latin-cross floor plan; its dome is a polychrome majolica dome.
The Chiesa San Giovanni was built around the 11th or 12th century and was formerly the town's main church. It preserves a majolica floor from 1790 and a pipe organ with gallery from 1795, both from the Neapolitan school. Praiano also has numerous votive chapels and small places of devotion from earlier or more recent periods, decorated with frescoes or ceramics. This creates a cultural tour for you that does not rely solely on a few major buildings but also includes smaller religious sites.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria ad Castro occupies a particularly elevated location. It lies on the slopes of Monte S. Angelo a tre Pizzi at 364 meters above sea level and overlooks the Fontanella Valley. Inside the church is a large fresco in the apse vault of the left side aisle. The building was erected in 1430 following a papal concession.
Stairway Paths, Festivals, and Music
The Passeggiata di San Domenico follows the stairways of Via San Domenico. Together with the Passeggiata di Grado and the Passeggiata di Terramare, this route shows how strongly stairways and short climbs are part of getting around Praiano. The paths clearly differ in character: one leads to the Torre di Grado and the sea, one offers intense panoramic views of the coast, and one runs along the stairways of Via San Domenico.
The festival calendar complements the churches and paths with recurring cultural events. The Festa di San Luca takes place on the first Sunday in July and follows a tradition that has existed for more than three centuries. The Festa di San Gennaro in Praiano is celebrated on the first Sunday in May, on September 19, and on December 16.
The Luminaria di San Domenico takes place every year from August 1 to 4. During this event, the residents of Praiano decorate the forecourt of the Santa Maria a Castro church with 2,000 candles every evening. I Suoni degli Dei features concerts on the forecourt of the Chiesa di Santa Maria a Castro along the Sentiero degli Dei. These events connect the historic site with experiences of light and music without diminishing the churches' own architectural significance.
