Rodio: Medieval Character and Mediterranean Landscape

Rodio is a medieval village between gentle hills covered with olive trees and more rugged peaks covered with chestnut trees. This contrast shapes the character of the place: Rodio combines a historically influenced settlement with a landscape where Mediterranean and higher-altitude elements stand side by side. Rodio thus combines its medieval character with sacred buildings and a hiking trail through the surrounding landscape.

Palace History and Fortified Architecture

The Santuario di Sant'Agnello Abate is located in Rodio, in the municipality of Pisciotta. Palazzo Landulfo is an old aristocratic palace that was recently restored and is intended for use as a museum. The building features strongly sloping defensive walls, a bartizan with loopholes at the main entrance and at the entrance to the tower, as well as a large portal. Aristocratic aspirations and defensive architectural elements come together here in an architecture that gives Rodio's history a concrete form.

Chapels and Religious Traditions

The Cappella di Sant'Antonio Abate stands at the entrance to Rodio and dates back to the 15th century; it is situated on level ground and has an entrance suitable for people with disabilities. The chapel is used for private prayers and more intimate religious ceremonies.

The Cappella della Madonna del Carmine stands on a hill west of Rodio along one of the paths leading from the village. It was previously dedicated to the Madonna della Neve. Until the middle of the 18th century, Rodio was under the jurisdiction of the Order of Malta. The western hillside location connects the chapel spatially with the village and its surroundings, while its former dedication and historical association with this authority reveal further facets of the village's history.

Hiking in the Pisciotta–Rodio Area

For hikers, the Sentiero di Castelluccio is a clearly defined tour: the trail is 13 kilometres long, lies in the Pisciotta–Rodio area, has a moderate difficulty level and takes 4 hours and 30 minutes. It leads through the Mediterranean maquis in the hills near Pisciotta. The combination of distance and duration establishes a clear timeframe for this hike within the planned hiking day.

The Sant'Agnello Festival Throughout the Year

The festival in honour of Sant'Agnello also has a fixed place in Rodio's annual cycle. It is celebrated three times every year: on 31 May, 8 August and 14 December. The dates spread the celebration across different parts of the year and complement the buildings and hiking trails with a recurring religious tradition.
