San Cipriano Picentino: Churches, Museum and Landscape

San Cipriano Picentino lies on a hill at the eastern foot of Monte Monna. The districts of Vignale, Pezzano, Filetta and Campigliano reflect the character of old hamlets and masserie in a vegetation-rich landscape that is suitable for nature excursions.

Museum and Churches with a Long History

The Museo civico di San Cipriano Picentino is located in the Palazzo delle Culture e della Cittadinanza Umanitaria on Via Roma. Its archaeological section displays Roman finds from the imperial period discovered in a Roman villa rustica on Via Pozzilli dating from the 2nd century AD and is connected with the archaeological excavations of the Chiesa Madre.

The museum also includes a historical-archival section with a selection of documents from the valuable collection of the municipal library and the historic Benedetto Croce Municipal Archive. The present-day Chiesa Madre di San Cipriano Vescovo e Martire was completed around 1754. It has a single-nave layout with side chapels, a false transept with two chapels and a large semicircular apse. Beneath its dome, archaeological traces of various construction phases are visible under a transparent protective structure.

The side chapels of the Chiesa Madre contain numerous wooden statues from the 16th and 17th centuries. The first record of a church dedicated to the bishop and martyr Cyprian of Carthage at this site dates from the first half of the 11th century. The Chiesa di Sant’Eustachio has been documented since 1309 and has a three-aisled basilica layout.

Restoration work carried out between 1998 and 2010 uncovered a fragmentary and incomplete cycle of 16th-century frescoes in the Chiesa di Sant’Eustachio. The church is located on the eastern slopes of Monte Monna, also known as Cerreta, at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level.

Montevetrano and the Landscape

The Castello di Montevetrano is located in the Campigliano district on a green, terraced hill covered with olive groves and spontaneous vegetation. Montevetrano initially served with its tower, and later with its entire defensive system, as an observation and defence point for the Salerno area. The ruins have a quadrangular layout; the central cylindrical keep is visible from several points across an area of approximately 30 square kilometres.

The municipal area includes the Special Area of Conservation SAC IT8050027 Monte Mai e Monte Monna and the Special Protection Area SPA IT8040021 Monti Picentini. Both protected areas complement the landscape around Monte Monna and the municipality’s wooded and green areas.

Established Routes and Regional Themes

Six tourist routes have been established in San Cipriano Picentino: the Sentiero delle Nocciole, the Sentiero di Vignale, the Sentiero di Don Benedetto, the Sentiero di Messer Jacopo, the Itinerario dell’olio and the Itinerario del vino e del pane.

The Sentiero delle Nocciole passes through 12 municipalities linked by the IGP designation for Tonda di Giffoni. The Itinerario dell’olio leads through the municipality’s extensive olive groves and offers views of olive-growing areas with DOP status. Between Pezzano and Filetta, the Itinerario del vino e del pane passes historic masserie, old ovens for baking bread and pizza, and wine cellars.

The first stage of Il Cammino dei Picentini leads from San Mango Piemonte to San Cipriano Picentino. The second stage leads from San Cipriano Picentino to Giffoni Valle Piana, in the district of Santa Maria di Carbonara. The north-south connection via S.P. 26 and S.P. 71 leads from the centre of San Cipriano through the entire municipal area, via Pezzano-Filetta, to Campigliano.
