Natural landscapes on the outskirts

At the edge of Rofrano’s built-up area lies the Forra dell'Emmisi, which is approximately 500 metres long. Its approximate length provides an initial spatial reference point for planning a crossing. The municipality of Rofrano includes part of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The limestone massif of Monte Cervati lies north of the built-up area.

Monte Cervati is designated as a Site of Community Importance. The Mingardo River lies west of the built-up area and is also designated as a Site of Community Importance. The canyon of Monte Rotondo is home to the Cascata dello Scanno del Fuoco.

Historic town centre and notable buildings

Rofrano’s historic town centre preserves its original urban layout, with an interconnected network of streets and stairways. The three historic entrance gates can serve as fixed reference points when finding your way around the town centre. The Le Tre Porte route connects Porta del Leccio, Porta Vallone, and Porta San Antuono. It is intended to introduce visitors to the origins, role, and development of Rofrano’s historic town centre.

The bell tower of the Church of San Nicola di Mira is 35 metres high and was built in 1755. The Church of Santa Maria di Grottaferrata was rebuilt after a landslide and reopened to the public in 1996. Together, the two buildings add specific information about the construction and use history of the historic town centre.

Trails and activities

The deeper sections of the Forra dell'Emmisi can be crossed by canoe, with the canoes operated by members of GET. The canoe crossing explicitly refers to the deeper sections of the gorge. The millennia-old Via Sacra leads to the summit of Monte Sacro; over the past millennium, it was used by pilgrimage caravans from Basilicata and Calabria. The rugged course of the Fiume Faraone makes canyoning possible in the gorges of Emmisi and Fistole.

The Parco Avventura Piano della Croce adventure park is an equipped visitor facility in Piani della Croce in Rofrano. Rofrano is one of the municipalities along the Cammino di San Nilo. The production area of Pomodorino di Rofrano includes the agricultural land of the municipality of Rofrano and neighbouring municipalities. The product’s regional classification therefore includes areas beyond the municipal boundary.

Practical guidance for planning hikes

A GPX track is available for two hikes: Monte Centaurino–Rupe di San Paolo and San Menale (Rofrano)–Monte Antilia. The GPX format can be used as a digital route reference during preparation. For the historic town centre, on the other hand, the three entrance gates provide fixed reference points along the Le Tre Porte route.
