Santa Marina between history and the Bussento landscape

Santa Marina lies on the slopes of Monte Tempone. The inhabited center overlooks the Bussento Valley and the Gulf of Policastro. Narrow streets, atmospheric alleyways and squares characterize the historic center and give a visit to the town a clear historical framework.

Churches, fortifications and medieval traces

Among the oldest testimonies is the Concattedrale Santa Maria Assunta. Its oldest part is a crypt built in the 6th century above Roman remains. The Convento di San Francesco is characterized by Gothic architecture; access is also guaranteed for people with disabilities. The Chiesa di Santa Marina Martire features stucco from the late 18th century.

The townscape also reflects the history of its fortifications. The 14th-century city walls were built on the remains of an earlier Byzantine fortification. The watchtower Torre di guardia dell’Oliva, also known as Torre dell’Auliva, rises among the ruins of the ancient castle. At the Castello di Policastro Bussentino, the original origins probably date back to the 10th or 11th century; at the same time, the castle offers views over the Gulf of Policastro.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Croce stands on an open hilltop overlooking the sea. For those interested in cultural history, the Museo Diocesano di Policastro Bussentino complements the religious buildings. Its collection tells the history of the ancient diocese through artworks from a period of nineteen centuries beginning in Roman times. One of the outstanding objects is a 15th-century ciborium made of Carrara marble. The museum also preserves a Flemish ivory crucifix, paintings, liturgical vestments and liturgical silverware.

Nature around the Bussento

Santa Marina is part of the Zona di Protezione Speciale Costa tra Marina di Camerota e Policastro Bussentino. The protected zone covers 3,276 hectares of land. The Pineta di Santa Lucia offers a different landscape impression, with stone pines and Aleppo pines. At the Foce del fiume Bussento, you will find a natural habitat and a place of tourist interest.

The Foce del fiume Bussento is also associated with various activities: excursions, horseback rides and activities such as kayaking are possible there. At the Ponte del Bussento, a staircase leads to a riverside path where fishing is possible according to the no-kill principle. From the port of Policastro Bussentino, Nautica Bifano offers personalized boat trips to the Area Marina Protetta di Punta Infreschi marine protected area and along the Cilento coast.

Festivals and local specialties

The Festa di Santa Marina is celebrated annually on June 18. The program includes a solemn Mass followed by a procession through the town. Another fixed date is the Sagra della Ruscedda: it takes place every year on August 12 in the main square of Lupinata, a hamlet of Santa Marina.

At the Sagra della Ruscedda, stalls offer bruschette with local oil and oregano, Ruscedda cheese and local wine. Alongside churches, museums and fortifications, this gives the town’s culture a culinary dimension that can be experienced on a specific festival date.
