Trentinara between the Path of Love, mountain trails and village history

Trentinara combines a historic town centre with paths through mountain landscapes and a strong festival tradition. The Via dell’Amore leads from the main square to a panoramic terrace. Along this path, visitors can see hand-painted majolica tiles by Sergio Vecchio depicting verses from love poems. This makes the exploration of the village begin on a path that also forms a direct connection between the central square and the viewpoint.

Paths between forest, rock and water

Trentinara offers a variety of landscapes for hiking. A path to the summit of 1,210-metre-high Monte Vesole leads through forests of alder, maple and beech trees. The Sentiero Tremonti, by contrast, is a challenging route through rocky terrain and a natural canyon. Along the Solofrone River, the Sentiero Tremonti passes a mill, stone bridges, dry-stone walls and rocky outcrops. Another notable feature is a waterfall more than 20 metres high.

The Sentiero degli Sposi leads from the Piazzetta through juniper and oak forests to a 12th-century Benedictine monastery in the municipality of Giungano. On the “Le due nevere” plateau, there is an equipped area with two examples of industrial archaeology. Thus, alongside nature trails, historical traces and specific destinations along the routes are also central to exploring the village.

Borgo Antico and historic churches

Trentinara’s Borgo Antico preserves the two historic entrance gates, Porta Soprana and Porta Sottana. The old part of the village includes cobbled streets and portals dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, associated with local master stonemasons. The Chiesa di San Nicola is an 11th-century Romanesque church. It is located in Trentinara’s historic centre, is now an art gallery and is also used for civil weddings.

Further churches complete this historic picture: the Chiesa del Rosario dates from the 17th to the 18th century, while the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta dates from the 17th century. The Carnevale di Trentinara draws on ancient rites connected with the cycle of nature. Here, culture is therefore expressed both in buildings and in traditional forms of celebration.

Festivals, bread and local flavours

The Festa del Pane e della Civiltà Contadina takes place in summer along the streets of the historic centre and has a history spanning 18 years. At this festival, bread and other typical products are tasted. They are prepared fresh in old wood-fired ovens made of local stone.

The festival calendar also includes the Festa della Madonna del Loreto, with a traditional candlelit procession on 23 August. The Festa Patronale di Santa Irene is celebrated every year on 16 October and includes a procession through the village. Trentinara can be reached by car via the SS18 Tirrena Inferiore. The nearest railway station to Trentinara is Paestum; there are train connections there from Naples and Salerno.
