Historic Traces at Churches and Castle
The Badia di Santa Maria in Strada is also known as the “Church of the Nativity of Mary.” It was founded in 994 by Bernardino di Mandello Boccadiferro on behalf of the Camaldolese monks. The origins of the Chiesa di San Pietro e Paolo are closely linked to the medieval Unciola Castle, which had existed in Anzola dell'Emilia since the 9th century.
The Samoggia River and Two Cycling Routes
The “The Abbey of S. Maria in Strada and Ponte Samoggia” route is 15 km long; its stated duration is 1.5 hours, excluding visits to places along the way. The “From Anzola to the Cassa di espansione del Torrente Samoggia” route is 17.5 km long and is listed as taking 2 hours, also excluding visits to places along the way. The difference in length and stated duration provides a direct time frame for choosing between the two routes. Anyone planning visits along the way should allow this time in addition to the respective route duration. The stated duration of each route should therefore not be equated with the total time required for an excursion. When planning a day with several stops, the half-hour difference forms part of the time planning. The additional 2.5 kilometres come on top of the time needed for visits.
Getting There by Train and Bus
The Bologna–Piacenza–Milano railway line has a stop in Anzola dell'Emilia. Anzola dell'Emilia is also connected by bus routes 87, 646, 651 and 576.
Practical Note on Visits
The Museo Archeologico Ambientale - La Terramara di Anzola is currently closed to visitors. No reopening date has yet been set. It should therefore not currently be included in planning as an open attraction. Until a reopening date is confirmed, this visit cannot be scheduled at a fixed time.
Festival in November
The “Festa di San Martino e sagra dei sughi” takes place annually in November in Anzola dell'Emilia. At this event, visitors have the opportunity to taste the traditional dessert. For a trip with a culinary focus, November can be planned as the period for this occasion.
