Castiglione dei Pepoli combines a historic center with sacred art, places of remembrance and trails into the Apennine landscape. Historic center and local culture
In the historic center, Parco della Rimembranza is located behind the town hall. Palazzo Pepoli in the center was built toward the end of the 15th century, while the Torre dell'Orologio Pubblico was built in 1724. Both buildings provide historic points of reference in the town center. Chiesa di San Lorenzo, dating from the 16th century, contains a fresco by Giacomo Cavedoni depicting “Saint Lawrence in ecstasy before the Virgin appearing in the clouds.” The church is dedicated to Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of the town.
Chiesa della Madonna della Cintura was also rebuilt between 1650 and 1682. Also known as Chiesa Vecchia, it is dedicated to Madonna della Consolazione, or Madonna della Cintura, and is considered the oldest former or historic place of worship in Castiglione dei Pepoli. It dates from the 17th century and was later rebuilt. The Centro Culturale Guidotti traces the local history and culture from the Bronze Age to the Second World War. The “Mondo rurale e i suoi mestieri” room focuses on traditional work in the Apennines and former occupations in the mountain region.
Places of remembrance and religious art
The Castiglione South African Cemetery preserves the remains of 502 war dead: 401 South Africans, 99 Britons and 2 Indians. Another cultural highlight is the Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie di Boccadirio in Baragazza. The three-nave church was built toward the end of the 16th century; inside is a blue-and-white maiolica bas-relief by Andrea Della Robbia depicting the Madonna with the standing Christ Child.
Lakes, viewpoints and the Apennine landscape
The Regional Park of the Lakes of Suviana and Brasimone borders Castiglione dei Pepoli. Lago di Santa Maria, an artificial reservoir built in 1917 on the Torrente Brasimone, reveals another facet of the landscape. The viewpoint at Piazza Guglielmo Marconi opens up views of the Valle del Brasimone. In the Centro Culturale Guidotti, the Sala della Terra explains the geological origins of the Apennines.
Loop trails and long-distance hiking routes
Several trails give your trip different focal points. The Via della Lana e della Seta is a 130-kilometer-long long-distance hiking route with a particularly wild character between Emilia and Tuscany. It heads toward Castiglione dei Pepoli and then reaches Tuscany. The official hiking guide and official hiking map support safe completion of the route. The Anello di Santa Maria loop begins at Piazza della Libertà and passes on the return journey by the Cimitero Militare Sudafricano, where Allied soldiers who fell in the Second World War are buried.
The Panorami montani loop leads through the forests around Monte Baducco and Monte Gatta. It includes a certified area explicitly dedicated to forest therapy, where the CAI Castiglione holds sessions. As a spiritual addition, the Santuario della Madonna di Boccadirio in Baragazza lies on a stage of the Via Mater Dei pilgrimage route.
